The leaders of North and South Korea, Kim Jong Un and Mun Ji In, met in the demilitarized area between the two countries this morning. Kim Jong Un is the first North Korean leader to step into the South Korean soil since 1953.

On Kim's initiative, the both leaders walked across the border to North Korea, and then returned to the so-called peace house in a demilitarized area. This is the third meeting of the leaders of both Koreas; the first was in 2000 and the second in 2007, the BBC reports.

North Korea's President Kim Jong Un said the new history of peace began. Mun Ji replied that he hoped for a brave deal, which would be a great gift to the entire Korean people and to all those who want peace. The main topic of the talks will be the controversial North Korean nuclear program.

Kim Jong Un announced the stoppage of nuclear tests a few days ago, which was welcomed both in the US and South Korea. Chinese scientists have revealed that, following the latest attempt on September 3 last year, when North Korea was to successfully test a hydrogen bomb, the underground nuclear complex Pungje Ri became unusable due to the explosive explosion.

The summit of the two Presidents of the two Koreas is preperation for a meeting between Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump, which should be held in early June.

The US is demanding that North Korea renounce its nuclear weapons, and Kim urges security guarantees, which are not yet well defined, before negotiations on nuclear disarmament. They are also likely to include the withdrawal of US military units from the cease-fire line.
