Grain Tower Battery.

Hi everyone!

The sun is out so to me that means a flight at the seaside!

Built in 1855, Grain Tower Battery had the sole purpose of defending the Thames Estuary against French Navy. It hosted three cannons however with advancements in design, the tower wasn't able to support newer generations of weapons and was effectively obselete as soon as it started operating!

Around 1910, changes in the structure were made- the extra brick built living quarters and armaments- after the government made efforts to defend key weak points around the south coast.

From my perspective, the tower is about 1/4 mile off the coast.

In the First World War, it was also used as a 'boom defense' against submarine attack. This was essentially a huge net strung between it and the shoreline near Sheerness to prevent the vessels from passing through towards the London.

It was decommissioned in 1956 and has been privately owned since 2005 but the condition of the structure has deteriorated.

Until the next time!
