I recently visited Birmingham for work and had some down time so I wandered around looking for interesting buildings to shoot.

In the past I have visited a couple of areas to the north and south, this time I stayed close to the centre in Digbeth.

First I visited an old viaduct that reminded me of the High Line, an old subway line in New York that was turned into a park. This version is not so fortunate and instead stands as an old relic along with other buildings in the area.

A lot of industrial buildings across the city are old, outdated and derelict which is sad but also great as a drone operator. As most blocks are vacant, it means there is low footfall around them. I felt at ease taking off outside such buildings.

A satellite view from 2023 shows this building in one piece so work is somewhat progressing. It was host to a huge cash and carry company before becoming an events space. Now it appears demolition is in progress.

Just next door is some waste land which could have once hosted a factory. The bridge crossing over the canal within the land boundary took my interest.

Contrast of building states in the immediate area. Yes, the window in the apartment block is intentionally crooked!

Black Sabbath mural has been here for a long time since the group was formed here.

This building has deteriorated quickly - it used to be a window glazing company. The roof didn't last long then nature took its course!

The concrete area of land to the right of this image has been vacant for a good number of years - the annual gala / show for the region is held here.

Walking a little further east of Digbeth, I found a path down the the canal system and followed it for a while. A film studio moved in and has renovated a period building along the canal then tastefully expanded it by using the same style of architecture which is nice to see.

Also in the area is an old steel works factory, and a very photogenic looking indoor market building with a huge glass roof.

Lastly an area once used by a waste disposal company that has been flattened but the road markings remain.

Finally some panoramas of the city featuring the railway station and the ill fated High Speed 2 rail project.

HS2 phase one was an ambitious plan to build a fast rail connection between London and Birmingham. Work on started in 2020 and by 2023, it was concluded that successful delivery of the project would be unachievable due to rising costs and poor planning.

I really want to explore more of the old industrial parts whenever I get the chance. The history of any city is important and drone photography is very useful because it really helps capture a snap shot of ongoing developments.
