Hello everyone!
On the way back home from a recent trip to Eastbourne, I checked out a castle in the middle of nowhere. The Herstmonceux Estate covers a large area of land, including a 15th century manor with a moat and The Observatory Science Centre.
Following a public footpath right through the middle of the estate leads through mixed use fields and forests.
The Royal Greenwich Observatory in London was founded in 1675 and used for stargazing as recent as 1947. At that time, the skies over London proved to be obscured by smog!
By 1958, this facility was built as light and pollution in the area was at a minimum. Three reflecting and three refracting telescopes in the six green domes seen below were added over time which are known as the ‘Equatorial Group'.
A lone telescope building was added in 1967 and once held the 'Issac Newton Telescope'.
Unfortunately, UK weather was proving to be difficult in stargazing terms so when the INT was moved to a site in the northern hemisphere, funding for the Observatory Science Centre reduced and the team running the facility moved to Cambridge in 1990.
Since 1994, the facility has functioned as a hands on centre for teaching and inspiring children and adults about the universe.
Further along the footpath, we arrive at the castle. From 1066 to 1708 Herstmonceux Manor was owned by the same family! Since then it has changed hands between members of Parliament, banks, the Science Research Council and now belongs to the Queen's University in Canada.
Trippy vertorama for good measure!
I'm very glad for my unplanned timing as the shadow from the turrets fell exactly east of the castle from a top down perspective.
These last two images are HDR vertoramas from three AEB images each (three different exposures). When I combined all six shots, the resulting image was really under exposed and Lightroom created some weird artefacts along the seams of were the shots were merged so I chose to export two images using half of the shots in each.
Shooting into the sun is very challenging at the best of times, even more so when the settings on the app reset after an update meaning that I was shooting in jpeg format only.
Granted- the images were AEB brackets however without RAW, so much detail and contrast was lost in the image data. I had to really dig deep in the edit to get any decent results from stacked images.
Live and learn!
Until the next time.
