Hello walkers of Hive!
I recently went to the seaside town of Eastbourne on the south coast to check out a replica of Nao Victoria. It was the first ship to circumnavigate the globe and on the day was leaving the town to sail to up north to Scarborough as part of a UK tour. The ship is operated by the same company that looks after the Santa Maria.
I headed to the harbour first to get some ground shots of her. I had some time before high tide allowed her to depart so I went for a walk elsewhere.
I arrived early in the morning with a little bite of freshness in the air. The sun was gently warming the docks and a few people were checking out the ship in the lock as it waited for high tide.
A view across the outer harbour.
I thought I had a while until she left so I headed to a park and kept refreshing the ship tracking app I use but unfortunately by the time I got to the coast again and set up, she was already quite far out to sea! I couldn't get any in situ harbour shots but I'm happy with the results!
This was the furthest over water I have ever flown, the winds were light so I took a chance.
A Martello Tower just outside the harbour. 74 of them were built along the south coast to defend against looming French evasion.
Following the early morning departure of the ship, I stuck around in town and walked along the seafront towards the pier and with a plan to walk further along the coast to Bexhill.
A view of a take off location, next to The Grand Hotel built in the Victorian era.
To the east of the lawns is a restaurant and another Martello Tower.
A statue of The 8th Duke Of Devonshire.
Closer to the pier is a lido that has been repurposed into a (dry) events space.
Almost in the centre of Eastbourne seafront is Eastbourne Redoubt. In my opinion it is a stunning example of a perfectly circular defensive fort with 360 degree views of the surrounding area. Built in 1805 as part of the Martello initiative, this part of the town was deemed higher priority to protect and whilst serving as a well positioned barracks in the chain of towers seen earlier.
Further east along the coast is Pevensey Bay- a very sleepy village with quaint buildings.
Another Martello Tower is visible surrounded by a housing estate with a unique layout.
Swimming pool and mini golf area under renovation.
Finally- another Martello Tower surrounded by a caravan park.
Skipping along a little, after quite a moderate trek, we arrive in Bexhill!
The groynes on the beach are numbered to assist walkers on the coastal path with their bearings.
A few beach..sheds(?) for rent.
The weather turned a little and the sea brought in a blanket of mist that quickly moved over the town.
Further along the coast to the east of the town is what I would say are 'standard' Victorian seaside houses. They are still very pretty but I decided to head back as that was all there was past this point.
Learning curve:
In preparation for the early morning shoot, I updated drone app the night before. When I came to edit the next day, I realised that the quality was reduced. That was because all the app settings had reset to default which meant that I was only shooting in jpeg and not jpg + RAW format for the whole day...which is mildly infuriating. The difference between shots from that day and prior to updating are night and day.
Whilst I'm happy with the results, I was kicking myself for a while.
Until the next time, take care everyone!
