Eyes on the Prize: Focus on God

In Matthew 6 vs 22 to 24, Jesus gives us profound wisdom about the power of focus and the importance of single-minded devotion. The verses say, The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.

But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

The eye is the lamp of the body. Imagine your eyes like windows to your soul. Just like windows allow sunlight to enter a house, your eyes let in either light or darkness to your inner being. When Jesus talks about healthy eyes, he's referring to clear, focused vision, keeping your attention on what truly matters.

Think of a flashlight in a dark room. If the light is bright, and focused on one spot, you can see clearly. But if the beam is scattered or weak, the room stays dark. In life, our focus works the same way. If we focus on good things like kindness, love, and faith in God, our lives will be full of light. But if our focus is scattered on things like greed, jealousy, or selfish desires, we're stuck in darkness.

Consider someone who is always chasing after money. Their vision is foggy because they're focused on material wealth, which can't truly be achieved. Their vision is foggy because they're focused on material wealth, which can't truly be achieved. As a result, they might feel empty and lost, even if they have all the money they desire. Their inner house stays dark because they're not allowing the true light, spiritual growth, love, and faith to enter.

Healthy eyes versus unhealthy eyes. Healthy eyes mean we see things clearly. It's like having pure intention. When your heart is set on doing what's right, your life reflects goodness. But when your eyes are unhealthy, meaning your focus is on things that are shallow or selfish, your life fills with confusion and negativity.

Imagine driving with a cracked windshield. If the crack spreads, it's hard to see the road ahead. You may swerve or even crash because your vision is impaired. Third, that's what happens when our focus is on unimportant or harmful things. We lose our way in life.

If the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness? This is a warning that if our hearts are filled with wrong intentions, we might not even realize how lost we are. It's like being in a cave and not knowing how deep into the dark you've gone.

You can't serve two masters. Jesus says we can't serve both God and money. This is about loyalty. Just like a servant can't have two bosses giving him different gifts, he can't have two bosses giving him different gifts. If you follow two different orders, you can't follow two different paths in life.

If you chase after wealth and material things, your heart drifts away from God. But if you're loyal to God, you'll find peace, joy, and purpose. Think about someone who's constantly working overtime to earn more money, missing out on family time, friendships, or opportunities to grow spiritually. They are serving the master of money and neglecting the deeper, more meaningful aspects of life. Eventually, they feel unfulfilled.

These verses remind us to focus on what matters. Love, faith, and serving God. When we fix our eyes on what's truly important, our lives will be full of light and purpose. Trying to split our loyalty between God and material things only leads to confusion and Choose your focus wisely.

Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6 verse 33
