So the teaching of Brother Eli, about tithing, has given us Christians a reminder that generosity, that is done freely, is what really defines Christians. And this is the law under the priesthood of Jesus Christ.
The Old Testament talked about the Levitical law. The tithing was important and it was fixed. But for Christ in general, for the reign of Christ, the law changed. And we are expected to give freely from our heart and not out of compulsion.
The book of Hebrews really says, God has already explained the new law of giving and there has been a shift. 2 Corinthians 9:7 also made emphasis on why Christians should give as they propose in their hearts, not by obligation or by a fixed percentage, but with freedom and joy.
God is a lover of a cheerful giver, not the one that will have to give because they are forced. Even in the book of Bethesda, even in 2 Corinthians 8:1-3, where the Macedonians, led by a perfect example, despised being poor and out of their poverty, they give generously beyond their capability and means.
This signifies the giving of freely. So in essence is that the Christian giving is motivated by love and not out of law. We are being urged by Brother Eli and this challenges us to keep examining our hearts and to give willingly. Trusting that when we give freely to our hearts, that God will guide our contribution and God will bless us. As they say, salvation is free.
When we give, we are trying to reflect the grace of a cheerful giver and of generosity.
Stay Blessed.
