Why China’s Fear of Failure Will Keep It Behind in the AI Race
"The United States’ real advantage in the AI chip race and across all high-tech fields lies not just in its resources, but in its culture of innovation. To stay ahead, the U.S. must continue to nurture an environment where failure is embraced rather than feared. By protecting this mindset, the United States can remain the global leader in the next breakthrough, just as it has for the past century. True innovation doesn’t come from obedience; it comes from the courage to fail."
--- Well, not necessarily. Germany has been quite failure averse as well, & yet has seen numerous technological innovations. The problem in China runs deeper. From early childhood on, Chinese learn not to stand out with original ideas. It is OK to stand out, but with following the example of your teacher not with innovation.
China’s Xi makes a rare visit to Tibet to mark 60 years of contested rule there
"Recent years have seen the large-scale migration of majority Han Chinese to the high-altitude region, the virtual closure of Tibet to journalists and foreigners, the removal of Tibetan children from their families to boarding schools where they are taught in Mandarin, and the repression of all forms of political or cultural expression outside Communist Party control."
--- Modern colonialism. What isn't there to celebrate?
India and China hail warming ties amid Trump-induced geopolitical shake-up
"Relations between the two nuclear powers plummeted in 2020 when a border dispute in the remote Himalayas turned deadly. Their soldiers engaged in hand-to-hand combat in the worst episode of violence between the neighbours in decades, with an official death toll of 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers. Since then, the two sides have held a series of talks to de-escalate the situation."
--- De-escalation. & that's all it is. They won't become friends just because of some US tariffs.
"Chinese state media phrased the discussion as agreeing to “explore the possibility of advancing boundary demarcation negotiations”."
--- Which some media interpret as India & China working on a final border agreement. Won't happen.
Germany, Japan boost defense ties amid China's growing clout
"Beijing, on the other hand, supports "Russia's war machine," Wadephul said, adding Germany will "defend the international rules-based order in this region as well," referring to the Taiwan Strait — a major maritime route that is of great strategic importance to trade-reliant economies like Germany and Japan. "Any escalation in the Taiwan Strait would have serious consequences for global security and the economy," warned the minister."
--- How irresponsible! Such dare! To support a rules-based order!
""In the case of Ukraine, we had to revise our assessment of the security situation in Europe," said Hardt, pointing out that German politicians hadn't taken warnings from Eastern Europe and elsewhere about the threat posed by Russia seriously enough. "We should not make the same mistake twice,""
--- True. Would be nice if German governments finally realized that sucking up to China won't do them any good. & in that vein:
China provides ‘crucial’ support that enables Putin’s war, Germany warns
"Wadephul added that Beijing's behavior "shows that China preaches the principles of non-interference and territorial integrity, but in reality undermines them.""
--- Emperor Xi is not amused.
China considering yuan-backed stablecoins to boost global currency usage, sources say
"China's plan for the usage of stablecoins, if approved, would mark a major shift in its approach towards digital assets. The country banned cryptocurrency trading and mining in 2021 due to concerns about the stability of the financial system."
--- Bullshit alert: The usual suspects might tell you this means that China wants to legalize cryptocurrencies. It won't. Anything crypto will stay prohibited in China.
"In a recent interview, PBOC advisor Huang Yiping told local media that an offshore yuan stablecoin in Hong Kong is "a possibility""
--- Which probably means that they might allow some stablecoin usage for international trade, but not inside China.
Why China Is Dunking On The Trump Administration's New TikTok Account
"Today, the CCP reiterated its stance on a TikTok sale in an editorial in the state-owned media outlet China Daily. The editorial began by applauding the Trump White House for creating an official TikTok Account — and gloating at the inconsistency between the White House’s actions and Congress’s ban of TikTok for national security reasons last year. “TikTok’s appeal and effectiveness as a communication channel has not been lost on even the White House,” it opened. “That the White House launched its own account on the app less than one month before the third extended deadline expires only serves to expose the hypocrisy of the U.S. side’s alleged ‘security’ charges against TikTok."
--- Looks like it.
"”Then, the editorial went on to remind readers that ByteDance, as a Chinese company, “must comply with Chinese laws and regulations,” and that Chinese law “prohibits the export of core technologies such as short video algorithms, drawing a red line for the TikTok transaction.”"
--- China's always drawing red lines & then doing nothing, but in this case I doubt that the CCP would allow the sale.
"Trump’s own Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick, has been singing a different tune, saying that TikTok will go dark in September unless the Chinese government approves a sale"
--- That would be a welcome surprise.
