China’s consumer prices fall more than expected in August as deflation woes persist

"China’s consumer prices fell more than expected in August while deflation in wholesale prices persisted, as calls mounted for Beijing to ramp up measures to bolster sluggish domestic demand and cushion weakening exports growth. The consumer price index dipped 0.4% last month from a year earlier, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics released Wednesday [...] The producer price index dropped 2.9% in August from a year ago [...] The deflation in PPI, now in its third year, has eased modestly compared to the prior months, but a “continued upcycle is still some way off for China,”"

--- Or, in other words: The totally non-existent recession continues.

Trump lobbies EU for 100% tariffs on China and India

"Trump's request to the EU, first reported by the Financial Times, follows remarks from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who said Washington was prepared to escalate economic pressure but needed stronger European backing"

--- If only you could trust Trump. Or: if only he had a consistent policy which you could trust.

Trump is upsetting the US allies needed to counter China

"It’s possible that recent spats could blow over."

--- You don't say! Democracies can change policies & overcome differences?

Silicon Valley enabled brutal mass detention and surveillance in China, internal documents show

"Their train tickets, hotel bookings, purchases, text messages and phone calls are forwarded to the government. Their house is ringed with more than a dozen cameras. They’ve tried to go to Beijing 20 times in the past few years, but masked men show up and grab them, often before they depart. And last year, Yang’s wife and younger daughter were detained and now face trial for disrupting the work of the Chinese state — a crime carrying a sentence of up to a decade in prison. Yet the Yangs say they are not criminals. They are simply farmers trying to beg Beijing to stop local officials from seizing their 1 1/2 acres of land in China’s eastern Jiangsu province."

--- Pretty common in China. Although according to the constitution Chinese have a right to petition the government, local governments often don't let them go. Not that the central government would really do anything about their petition in the first place.

"Over the past quarter century, American tech companies to a large degree designed and built China’s surveillance state, playing a far greater role in enabling human rights abuses than previously known, an Associated Press investigation found. They sold billions of dollars of technology to the Chinese police, government and surveillance companies, despite repeated warningsfrom the U.S. Congress and in the media that such tools were being used to quash dissent, persecute religious sects and target minorities."

--- Not really much new in this investigation. All of this has been known for a long time.

China approves nature reserve at disputed South China Sea shoal claimed by the Philippines

"“The building of the Huangyan Island National Nature Reserve is an important guarantee for maintaining the diversity, stability and sustainability of the natural ecosystem of Huangyan Island,” the notice said, referring to Scarborough Shoal by its name in Chinese."

--- Or in other words: another great tool to bully the Philippines.
