Trump hails 'amazing' meeting with China's Xi but no formal trade deal agreed
"China has agreed to suspend export control measures it had placed on rare earths"
--- We'll see how that will work out. More importantly, we will also see whether the same goes for exports to Europe.
"A jubilant Trump told reporters on Air Force One that he had also got China to start immediately buying a "tremendous amounts of soybeans and other farm products"."
--- Tremendous, yeah. The last time China promised something like that it didn't work so well.
"In the immediate aftermath of the meeting, the US also said it would drop part of the tariffs it has levied on Beijing over the flow of ingredients used in making fentanyl to the US."
--- And why? I haven't heard anything about that flow being decreasing significantly.
"it seems other tariffs, or taxes on imported goods, will remain in place, meaning that goods arriving in the US from China are still being taxed at a rate of over 40% for US importers"
--- Well, that's at least something.
"More positively for Beijing, it will now be able to speak to Jensen Huang, the head of US tech firm Nvidia - according to Trump. Nvidia is at the heart of the two countries' fight over AI chips"
--- It would be moronic for Trump to allow Nvidia's best chips being able to be exported to China. Entirely moronic, but yeah, you know what I think about Trump.

"There was, however, no mention of a breakthrough on TikTok."
--- Well, US law is in Trump's way, so who knows what will happen.

Xi and Trump find temporary truce as China plays longer game
"Has Trump got the bigger, better deal with China he always wanted? Not yet. Even if he does get a deal, and the two sides put ink on paper, Beijing has now shown that it is not willing to bend to Washington - and that it is more resilient."
--- Meh, it's not that different from previous deals with China. China makes some promises, the US backs down, and China breaks the promises. That's what's gonna happen.

U.S. agencies back banning popular home WiFi device, citing national security risk
"The proposal, which arose from a months-long risk assessment, calls for blocking sales of networking devices from TP-Link Systems of Irvine, California, which was spun off from a China-based company, TP-Link Technologies, but owns some of that company’s former assets in China. The ban was proposed by the Commerce Department and supported this summer by an interagency process that includes the Departments of Homeland Security, Justice and Defense [...] None of the agencies involved responded to requests to comment on the proposal, which is now back in the hands of Commerce. While Commerce initially proposed the ban and sought the interagency review, it has taken no action since that process was completed. It could still decide to not issue a ban against TP-Link routers or could reach an agreement with the company for a different resolution of its concerns. The White House, which the people said supported the proposed ban, could also change its mind."
--- Considering how proud Trump is at the moment about his dealings with China, there probably won't be any action by the commerce in the future as well.

US government allowed and even helped US firms sell tech used for surveillance in China
"China is getting around export bans on the sale of powerful American AI chips by renting them through U.S. cloud services instead. But the proposals prompted a flurry of activity from more than 100 lobbyists from tech companies and their trade associations trying to weigh in, according to disclosure reports. The result: All four times, the proposal failed, including just last month. [...] Under the cloud services loophole, Chinese companies barred from accessing cutting-edge chips can use Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services overseas instead to train their AI models. Microsoft and AWS also both advertise the capacity to store video surveillance footage on their cloud services for Chinese customers. [...] Even sanctioned Chinese companies can use AWS and Microsoft Azure to offer surveillance abilities to customers overseas. For example, despite U.S. sanctions over human rights abuses in Xinjiang in 2019, Dahua and Hikvision, China’s two largest surveillance companies, use AWS to offer networked surveillance abroad, according to marketing material on the company websites. Hikvision markets a video surveillance platform called “HikCentral” to private companies overseas, which can be also deployed on Azure, according to a post on Hikvision’s website this year. "
--- So, it seems just like Biden, Trump is not really serious about all these bans.
