China's economy slumps in August, casts doubt on growth target

"Industrial output grew 5.2% year-on-year, National Bureau of Statistics data showed on Monday, the lowest reading since August 2024 and weaker than a 5.7% rise in July. It also missed forecasts for a 5.7% increase in a Reuters poll. Retail sales, a gauge of consumption, expanded 3.4% in August, the slowest pace since November 2024, and cooling from a 3.7% rise in the previous month. They missed a forecast gain of 3.9%. [...] Chinese households, which have seen their wealth shrink in the real estate downturn, have tightened their purse strings as business confidence falters, dampening the jobs market. Unemployment edged up to a six-month high of 5.3% in August, from 5.2% a month prior and 5.0% in June. Meanwhile, new home prices fell 0.3% last month from July and 2.5% on an annual basis, a different NBS dataset showed."

--- All that growth... sounds nice, right? Too bad that it's all bullshit.

US and China reach deal to transfer TikTok ownership, trade official says

"Speaking after emerging from negotiations with Chinese officials, Scott Bessent said the deal was coming but declined to reveal the commercial terms. “We have a framework for a TikTok deal,” the treasury secretary told reporters after coming out of high-level talks in Madrid. “We’re not going to talk about the commercial terms of the deal. It’s between two private parties, but the commercial terms have been agreed upon.”"

--- Not much to say about this until we know details, but I doubt that there will be an effective way of denying China access to user data. s.a. : US says it will press ahead with TikTok ban if China doesn't drop tariff, tech demands

China meanwhile shows how much it values openness & cooperation:

China accuses Nvidia of violating anti-monopoly laws

"China's market regulator has said US computer chipmaker Nvidia has violated Chinese anti-monopoly laws. The country's market watchdog did not give details of how Nvidia had breached the rules, but said it would continue to investigate the matter."

--- Details are irrelevant, because it's mostly about damaging Nvidia.

Industrie, Immobilien, Konsum: Chinas Wirtschaft lahmt an mehreren Fronten
