If there’s one thing a photographer has, it’s the vision to know when a person has potential for modeling. This is the story of my latest photo session. In this session, a 20‑year‑old girl asked me to take some photos for her birthday. From the very first moment I saw her, I knew she had something special for posing in front of the camera. Her face was well‑defined, with sharp features, slender but with the figure needed to model and make the photos look as if they came straight out of a magazine.

At first, I didn’t tell her. As the session went on, I noticed that her body and her movements were natural. She had no idea of the talent she possessed. The shots came out perfectly with a single click — there was no need to position her much, just to let her know I was about to shoot. At the end of the session, I told her she had the air of a model, that she had potential for it. She burst out laughing and told me she didn’t believe it, that she didn’t think she was natural enough for that. I told her to wait until she saw the photos, and as I began showing them to her, she became excited. She told me she couldn’t believe it, that it didn’t even look like her.

Sometimes natural talent can be spotted from miles away, and a photographer has that ability to recognize it at a distance. This session was one of my favorites because it puts my vision as a photographer into practice and reassures me that I’m still learning and refining my eye to take it to the next level.

Si hay algo que tiene el fotógrafo es la visión de saber cuándo una persona tiene potencial para el modelaje. Esta es la historia de mi última sesión de fotos. En esta sesión, una chica de 20 años me pidió que le tomara unas fotos para su cumpleaños. Desde el primer momento en que la vi, supe que tenía algo especial para posar ante la cámara. Su rostro era perfilado, con facciones marcadas, delgada pero con el cuerpo necesario para modelar y lograr que las fotos quedaran como si fueran de revista.

En un primer momento no se lo dije. Conforme iba avanzando la sesión, veía que su cuerpo y sus movimientos eran naturales. Aquella chica no sabía el talento que tenía. Las fotos salían de un solo disparo, no había que acomodarla mucho, solo indicarle que iba a disparar. Al final de la sesión le dije que ella tenía aire de modelo, que tenía potencial para ello. Comenzó a echar carcajadas y me dijo que no lo creía, que no se consideraba lo suficientemente natural como para eso. Le dije que esperara a ver las fotos, y a medida que se las fui enseñando, estaba emocionada. Me decía que no podía creerlo, que esa no era ella.

A veces el talento natural se distingue a kilómetros, y un fotógrafo tiene esa habilidad de distinguirlo a distancia. Esta sesión fue una de mis favoritas porque pone en práctica mi visión como fotógrafo y me da la certeza de que sigo aprendiendo y perfeccionando mi ojo para llevarlo a un siguiente nivel.
