Not long ago, I had a clash with two photographer-artists from another province. It was quite a peculiar encounter: they looked down on me and gave me advice as if they knew more than I did. I simply adopted a neutral stance, listened to them, but inside their egocentrism made me angry.
Hace poco tuve un choque con dos artistas fotógrafos de otra provincia. Fue un encuentro bastante peculiar: ellos me veían de forma inferior y me daban consejos como si supieran más que yo. Simplemente adopté una postura neutra, les prestaba atención, pero su egocentrismo me daba rabia por dentro.
They spoke to me about the idea of photographic concepts, as if one must first have a concept before taking a photograph. On this point, I disagreed. When you see a good photograph, you capture it right away; the concept can come afterward. I don’t believe stopping to think about concepts and losing the moment is the best option.
Me hablaron sobre el concepto fotográfico, como si primero hubiera que tener un concepto para después hacer la fotografía. En esto no estuve de acuerdo. Cuando ves una buena fotografía, la tomas y ya está; después construyes un concepto. No creo que detenerse y perder el momento pensando en conceptos sea la mejor opción.
My photography seeks to transmit social struggles, poverty, and everything related to people’s lives. Everyday life can become attractive in the right eyes.
Mi fotografía trata de transmitir el mal social, la pobreza y todo lo que tiene que ver con la vida de las personas. Lo cotidiano puede volverse atractivo en los ojos correctos.
For me, the construction of a concept happens after the photograph is taken, but what truly matters is the intention behind the shot. I don’t think that, in the photographs I’m showing today, I stopped to think about concepts. Photography is an art that also deserves to be given meaning by others.
Para mí, la construcción de un concepto se hace después de tomada la fotografía, pero lo que realmente vale es la intención con la que la capturas. No creo que en estas fotografías que muestro hoy me haya detenido a pensar en conceptos. La fotografía es un arte que también merece que las personas le den un concepto.
I believe that 50% of the work belongs to the artist, and the other 50% comes from concepts and the opinions of the people. Everyone has the right to make art in the way that suits them, in their own style, in the way they feel comfortable. I want to point out that these are some of my best photos—images that touched my soul after taking them, simply by looking at them. They have also struck a sensitive chord in many others.
Tengo el pensamiento de que el 50 % de la obra es del artista y el otro 50 % pertenece a los conceptos y a la opinión de las personas. Cada quien tiene el derecho de hacer arte como le convenga y a su estilo, como se sienta cómodo. Quiero acotar que estas son unas de mis mejores fotos, las cuales me han llegado al alma después de tomarlas, solo con verlas. A muchas personas también les han tocado la fibra sensible.
I do think studying to create a concept is important, but you should never stray from your art by focusing only on concepts.
Creo que estudiar para crear un concepto es importante, pero no puedes desviarte de tu arte por enfocarte únicamente en los conceptos.
