🎺🌟 Folia de Reis: A Living Tradition of Brazilian Popular Culture 🇧🇷
Have you ever heard of Folia de Reis?
It’s one of the oldest and most beautiful cultural celebrations in Brazil, held between Christmas and January 6th (Epiphany/Three Kings' Day) — especially in rural areas of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Goiás, and Bahia.
Inspired by the journey of the Three Wise Men to visit baby Jesus, this tradition blends faith, music, theatre, and joyful celebration.

🎶 How Does It Work?
Groups called Companhias de Reis (Kings' Companies) — made up of musicians, singers, and symbolic characters — go from house to house playing instruments like guitars, tambourines, accordions, and drums, singing traditional songs praising the birth of Christ.
Guided by the Star of Bethlehem and led by a mestre (master), the group spreads joy, blessings, and a strong sense of community. Families welcome them with food, drinks, or donations in return for the music and prayers.

🎭 Colors, Rhythms, and Symbolism
Colorful costumes, festive masks, decorated flags, and a tall pole with ribbons and a shining star — everything in the Folia de Reis has a spiritual and symbolic meaning. It’s a celebration deeply rooted in Brazilian cultural and religious heritage.

🌍 Tradition That Endures
Despite time and modern challenges, Folia de Reis remains a powerful expression of faith, resistance, and cultural identity. In many towns, it is officially recognized as cultural heritage and continues to delight people of all ages.
