If you have read books like Think and Grow Rich, As A Man Thinketh, or The Secret, you will be familiar with the concept that your reality is a manifestation of your past thoughts, particularly those that were repeated constantly and infused with positive or negative energy.
For example, if you frequently pictured yourself as a grateful and lucky person in the past, you have probably "attracted" wealth into your life. On the other hand, if you always thought of yourself as someone who was rejected and hurt, you have likely had difficulty making new friends and getting into relationships.
If this "law of attraction" is indeed true, to what degree do we manifest our own realities? Is every single event, sight, and sound we experience created by one of our previous thoughts, or can we only influence the way we perceive the situations and circumstances that arise in our lives?
Manifesting The Physical
From the moment we are born, everything seems new to us. From our parents, to the baby crib, to the elementary school, and so forth. However, could it be possible that we somehow manifested the exact circumstances we experience as children?
Those who believe in reincarnation and karma think it's possible that our childhood materialized from the thoughts and actions of a previous lifetime.
While that's one possibility, perhaps the foundation of our reality is formed via the collective consciousness of other sentient beings.
Man-Made vs. Living Things
For example, sitting at my desk and looking around the room, I can safely say that another human mind visualized this apartment before it materialized into reality. Also, if I look at the fork I'm eating breakfast with, it seems obvious that someone, somewhere in the world pictured it before it manifested into the physical realm.
This explains the materialization of man-made objects, but what about living organisms?
For example, if you go for a walk in the forest and see a butterfly, chances are that no human mind visualized such a complex creature beforehand. Of course, we cannot rule out the possibility that you dreamed of the butterfly in the past, or imagined it in a previous lifetime, but that seems rather far-fetched and solipsistic.
So who imagined the butterfly into existence?
One could simply say that God created it. Another explanation would be that the butterfly and its evolutionary predecessors used their consciousness and intention (to attract mates or defend themselves, for example) to evolve over time from a single-celled organism into a beautiful and intricate insect.
But what about natural and inanimate objects like rocks, metals, and water? That's a bit of a mystery, but some would argue that they too are projections of collective consciousness.
If that is indeed the case, God could be conceptualized as the combined awareness of all beings, and their will to manifest things into "reality".
Situations and Circumstances
However, we may all interpret this reality differently based on our own unique beliefs, which cultivate in our subconscious minds over years, decades, or possibly even multiple lifetimes.
For example, you may have a short conversation with a girl, from which she leaves abruptly.
If you have come to believe something like "women don't like me" you'll tell yourself that she left because you're ugly, or because you did something off-putting to push her away.
On the other hand, if you are convinced that "women love me" you'll tell yourself that she left because she was intimidated by your good looks or your charm.
It's the exact same situation, just interpreted in two different ways, depending on your subconscious beliefs about yourself and the world.
Therefore, there could be an infinite number of realities that exist around us at all times, and we simply tap into them depending on the personal identities we have developed throughout our lifetimes.
You Attract What You Are
As children, we are easily molded by the adults around us. If we were repeatedly told as children that we were unlovable by our parents, stupid by our teachers, and powerless by the media, that would have become our reality.
However, as adults we have more control over our minds, especially if we practice meditation and positive thinking. That said, simply thinking the thought "I deserve love" will be overridden by your subconscious if you have been conditioned from a young child to believe that you are unlovable.
So how can we change our identities, and create a better reality for ourselves?
If we practice resting our minds to the point where they become impressionable, and then intentionally produce positive thoughts and imaginings, we can reprogram our subconscious to filter out a new reality from the infinite possibilities available to us.
Although you may have a negative perception of yourself now, there was probably at least one time in your life where you felt loved, smart, powerful, or whatever it is you want to be. Those would be the situations you want to meditate on, day in and day out.
It's important to realize that mere thought alone without emotion will not manifest into the physical realm. Also, manifestation takes time and constant effort, with reality gradually matching your evolving subconscious.
Consistency is key. Through repetition of meditation, visualization, and positive thinking, you can reprogram your hidden thoughts, change your identity, and manifest a new reality.
Ultimately you attract what you ARE, not what you think about, and your identity will only change by repetitively imagining yourself as who you want to be.
Until next time...
Objective reality could very well be a manifestation of the collective consciousness of all living beings. We "attract" the situations and circumstances that arise in our lives, and interpret them as either positive or negative based on our subconscious beliefs, which can be reprogrammed through consistent meditation, visualization, and positive thinking.
