The world is now money-minded, and it’s taken the joy out of so many things. These days, we complain so much about how woke movies have become, but many times, the producers of these movies don’t make them woke because they feel like it, they do it because they believe that it would appeal to a wider audience and thus also reflect in the earnings the movie brings in.
Gone are the days when people simply told stories because they had stories to tell, now we tell stories because if we don’t, we won’t eat. So, most of the time, our target audience determines the kind of stories we tell, not us determining what story we want to tell. Because these days, anything you’re doing that doesn’t bring in money is simply a waste of time.

We’ve heard of people being refused treatments simply because they don’t have the money to do so, and they’d rather be left to die until their loved ones can provide the money. Everything is simply based on how much money can be taken from the people, and not how much value can be given to them. These days, schools have it worse. Almost everything is compulsory!
You must buy textbooks from the school’s bookshop, and you must buy notebooks from their bookshop as well. Uniforms will only be accepted from select tailors. You must pay for excursions and parties. During my time, you chose if you wanted to go to whatever party your school was organizing. Now, they force it upon you. Like, even if you don’t want to go, you must still pay the fee! Like, it’s so crazy!

And now, I heard that many of them are making summer coaching compulsory. Summer is the time for the children to rest and have fun as kids that they are, you want them back to school to continue learning the same things they would learn when the first term begins. Lol! Even more annoying is the fact that the teachers don’t even make so much money, all this monies only goes to the owners of the school.
And so, the world is taken over. Someone mentioned that greed has taken over the world, and that’s why everything is now profit-based. But I agree, with a little addition; it’s greed and need. Greed is the main cause of need in this world, because without greed, people won’t have so many needs. Humans are obsessed with owning so many things and taking, and that drives up the need! Humans need education, but the person who can provide that education makes it so damn expensive so he can be rich. To be able to pay for his kids to go to school, the doctor would also charge exorbitantly, not just to afford the high fees, but also to keep some for the rainy day. Everyone likes having some extra money.
And that’s how it goes. People need more money because every other person is expensive, and also because they need more for themselves. And that’s why till tomorrow, many people don’t do the thing they love, because if they try that, hunger will finish them! They’ll die of starvation. I once saw a man who told me how much he loved teaching. According to him, he was so good that when he taught you, it was as if he opened your head and put the information into it. Bro was pretty confident in his passion. But he told me he would never dare to be a teacher. At least not in Nigeria. Simply because no one respected teachers; not the government, not other civil servants, not anyone else. And their pay is terrible!!!

Do you know what the world is missing out on simply because people are not doing what they have a passion for? Instead of getting teachers who genuinely want to impact knowledge, we get hustlers who are looking for their urgent 2k. Instead of doctors who want to save lives, we get those who are more interested in keeping quotas and clocking in their shifts. Instead of getting original movies, we simply get stories that will just sell and soon be forgotten.
Sadly though, there’s nothing we can do about this. Because when all is said and done, all these things are businesses, and their main goal is to make a profit. A hospital that’s not making a profit will soon shut down, and so will a school. But therein lies the conundrum. If these institutions focus more on their service than profits, they’d shut down. But when the focus is more on profits, they become ruthless and, many times, downright cruel and materialistic.
I guess there is no good way to look at this, only the government can save us from this, and that’s by taking charge of most of these institutions. From hospitals to schools, and whatnot. Until then, corporations will keep deciding what goes for us. And if nothing positive happens, we and the coming generation are cooked!
