I’ve always wondered what the world would be like if we all could speak freely without having to filter our thoughts. A world where we simply didn’t care about the consequences of the things we say. Not that the consequences don’t exist, just that we don’t care. In the world today, we have been groomed to think things twice, or even more than twice, before we open our mouths to say them.
Regardless of our intentions, we have to think them through first because we’re scared of hurting other people. Our words hold so much power that if care is not taken, they can ruin our lives and the lives of those around us. I’ve seen how the words of one person caused a government to change the constitution. We’ve also seen how one person’s status changed from being a citizen to being a terrorist, simply because of the things they said.
So yeah, a world where we don’t have a filter, will it be a crude world, or will it just be another walk in the park? There are several ways to look at this. One of the reasons many of us get offended when we come across people who don’t seem to have any sort of control over their tongue is that we know that they could choose to control it, they just don’t bother. When you see a full adult saying sexist, racist, or tribalistic things, they get to you because you feel that as an adult, they should know better.
Besides, if a child were to say those exact same things, while you might be hurt, you might not really be offended because you know that they don’t have as much control yet. If anything, you’d be offended at the adults in the child’s home. That’s the reason why when you see a child who just seems to say so many filthy things, you would always wonder, “What kind of upbringing are your parents giving you?”
So, in a world where we don’t have control over the things we say, we’ll most likely adapt to it. And it’ll be one of those things like farting and belching. They’re natural things with life, but you can’t just do them anywhere. Yet, even though you do end up doing them by mistake, people would only be pissed for the moment, until they forget about it. And life goes on.
But then, I know for sure that such a world would be a crazy one. People just saying their minds and sharing their opinions would be wild. Things that you normally’d keep to yourself would be blurted out, and people would know what you really think of them. While it might help us all to be more truthful to each other, it will especially be more hurtful to those who aren’t equipped for harsh words. There are people who just a negative comment can really put them down, and if they’re unfortunate enough to be surrounded by such people, it’ll be a huge assault on their minds.
And thus, we have the gift of keeping our thoughts to ourselves and saying only what we believe is best in the scenario. But then, that’s also what birthed lies, because if you can hide certain truths, you can also distort them in whatever way you choose. And you can say or claim anything without even caring about the consequences, even though your belief lies elsewhere.
Is the world as it is today because of the lies people tell each other? Are we experiencing chaos and wars because people are just so deceptive and cunning? If we could read each other’s minds, or if we just lacked the ability to lie and hide our thoughts, would it make the world better?
Honestly, I have no idea. Would the world of total truth be half as good as this world of partial truth? Because, as bad as it is right now, there are still so many good people and things about the world, and there are still those who choose to stand for truth. Still, is it better than a world where everyone had no choice but to tell the truth?
