One of the most fascinating things, or maybe even frustrating things, about social media today is usually not about the content that we put out, but more about how the content connects with the people who consume said content. Because no matter how we look at it, the content always has to connect with people, if not, you’ll basically be talking to yourself, and no one will listen to anything you have to say.

And that’s why when we come across content that we don’t connect with, we simply swipe past. And with the way the algorithm operates, it focuses more on the type of content you consume, giving different versions of the same thing from different creators. And as a result, you’re made to stay longer on the platform. Just consuming.

That’s a good thing, right? You see, I’ve said this before, but everyone sees themselves as the main characters in their stories, and many times, we also see ourselves as the main characters in other people’s stories as well. Which is why some things will never make sense to you simply because you’re only looking at it through the myopic lens of your experiences.

But then, when a particular type of content isn’t your cup of tea, what should you do? Scrolling past should be the answer, right? But sadly, most of the time, people don’t do that. They simply try to change the creator, wanting to make them bend to their own will. And when such creators refuse to do as such, it begins to warp how they’re seen by such viewers. And that’s why many times, you’ll see people who follow certain influencers, but they don’t enjoy their content. Tell them to unfollow said influencers, they’d refuse. They’d rather hate and complain under every single post.

And the main problem with this? We have to accept that we’re only the main characters in our stories, just as the creators are the main characters in theirs. When we consume content, we do so through the lens of our own background and experiences. That’s why when they connect to us, they hit us in places that we’re familiar with. And most of the time, when such content lacks the familiarity or even strikes us as things we would prefer not to be familiar with, we simply resist it.

If you don’t like something, just ignore it and move on. If you don’t like a person, don’t continue going after them, expecting to change them to your own idea of who they should be. This is because you won’t like it either if someone were to try to change you into who you didn’t want to be. But many times, people refuse to place themselves in other people’s shoes, and that’s why any little thing you do comes under scrutiny.

You show that you have money, you’re a show-off, you try to be humble, you’re too poor. You do this, and you do that, and a microscope is placed over every single thing that you do. Instead of people simply taking it for what it is, content. They’d rather take it for how it affects them. Making them the main character.

But then, that’s how marketing ads work, right? After all, if an ad doesn’t connect to me, if I don’t make it all about myself, how will I patronize the brand? Maybe this is just who we are for real. Maybe we’re cursed to only see ourselves as the main thing while every other person is a side piece in this big ass game called life.

But then, what do I know? I’m just another storyteller.
