Things are not really going according to plan at the moment, and I have to say that there is a reason for that. I believe that’s what you get when you make plans for a particular day, but you end up not doing it, or you’re stuck with having to do something totally different. Many times, these changes are by choice because we’re looking for something different. And other times, life makes the choices for us. We’re on one path one day, doing what we know best, thinking that all is right with the world.

But then, in comes the twist! Things change, and we find ourselves scrambling around, trying to find our feet. But then, that’s just how life is. Many times, things go exactly as we want them to; sometimes, they go only slightly as we want them to. And other times, they just go the exact opposite of what we want. But then, what do we do in such a scenario? Do we just curl up on our bed and cry? Nah… that’ll always be a bad idea.

You see, change is always scary. Transformation is even scarier. But if there is one thing I’ve come to learn about change, it’s that most times, people are wrong about their assumptions of it. We’ve heard that people are scared of change because, in truth, they’re scared of the unknown. But is that really the case? If you’re expecting a change, then you have an idea of what is to come, and in some cases, what would also come if things don’t go your way.

Maybe, just maybe, people aren’t scared of the unknown, they’re just scared of the process. They’re scared of what they’d have to do, the sacrifices they’d have to make, and the pain they’d have to put themselves through to get there. The transformative process that is required for change, that’s what’s making everyone so scared. Not exactly the change itself.

But then, if we’re all so scared, why do we crave it so much? A famous singer once said that nobody wants to die, but we all want to go to heaven. And that’s the truth. We all want better, but the very act that will need to be done to get there, many are scared of doing it. Because there are so many thorns and issues that lie on that particular road. There is failure, ridicule, setbacks… all forms of obstacles designed to keep you from your change. So, for many, it’ll just be safer to dream of the change than actually go for it. That way, they won’t get hurt.

Is this the problem with my country today? We all clamor for change, we all want transformation, but are we willing to work for it? Are we willing to stand our ground against those who are oppressing us? Are we willing to take a stand? As it is for individuals, so it can also be for nations. When we’re too scared of the transformative process, then we’ll most likely never see that change. This is a lesson that you can take home; in your life, your city, or even your country. If you’re scared of the cost of the process, then you’re not ready for change.

It is what it is.
