Currently our world's leaders are mostly psychopaths. A psychopath is a person without warm empathy. They are (were) very good at getting to the top of any pyramid structure, as they have no conscious. They will do anything to get to the top, and think nothing of the people they have destroyed.
They can mimic strength, power, dominance, but they are very lacking when it comes to showing kindness or compassion.
We have, in the past, selected leaders for their strength. And, we lived in tribes, and had to defend against powerful beasts, a powerful leader was a must. But, now we have the great equalizer that Colt made, and few beasts where we live. So, what we need today is leaders who are wise and compassionate.
Not bleeding heart liberals, but truly compassionate people who knows it is better to not enable to continue bad habits. Giving more money to a druggy or an alcoholic does not help, and can often leave them dead. So, a wise, compassionate person will avoid that. Further, a truly compassionate person will not just throw money at the problem. They will be invested in solving the problem.
The future of election debates will center around showing and proving compassion.

Govern-cement is corrupt because we elected the corrupt.
The old adage is that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. However, it is not really true, but we really do not know that, because we elect the absolutely corrupted. The DNC and RNC make sure that the candidates are bought, before they are ever allowed on the ticket.
So many of these corrupted politicians are psychopaths. So, not only are they corrupt, but they will also do anything for more money and/or power. Kill thousands of people and knock down a few buildings in NYC, not a problem. Begin a war in the middle east over who gets to sell oil for what, yep, done that.
And, if you elect corrupt psychopaths, you get corrupt govern-cements. You get welfare that is an easy system to game. You get Social inSecurity that is cleaned out AND never keeps up with actual inflation. You get "affordable housing" that is really just a scheme to pay their "friends" to build shoddy houses.

If you want things done right, elect a person that wants it done right
Sure, most politicians will lie to you, and tell you that they are for "Doing things right & Change".
Since you cannot tell who wants things done right, and who is just lying, we cannot decide based on who shouts "change" louder. What you want is to choose based on compassion. If the person is truly compassionate, they will want to see things done right, and the harm minimized as much as possible. So, if you elect a compassionate person, you will not only get things done right, you may get things done better.

If you want the truth, ask the right questions.
In the future, we will see debates open with these kinds of questions. List ten things that make your opponent a good fit for this job.
All we see today is two people trying to tear each other down. What if that was completely reversed? That we had a competition where each candidate tried build up the other person!
The thing about this tactic is that psychopaths have the hardest time trying to appear compassionate. They don't understand it, they don't get it. They often mess up. Like, when someone dies, they may mistakenly tell a grieving person that "it is good they are dead".
The RNC, and especially the DNC will be blindsided by this new demand from the voters. (Especially the DNC, because they have been pretending to care for so long.)

When we have people in office who actually care about the people, everything changes. And, it will probably cost less.
They did a program in San Diego long ago, where they got welfare stuck people off the roles. They did this with a lot of counseling, and getting people into, and through college, and into finding a job. The thing that probably made this work was that there was a lot of people who cared. Having someone who cares about you getting into a good job, really helps. The program was a huge success. And then the politicians SHUT IT DOWN.
If we have people who care, and get them the tools they need, then most government programs will start working, and as they work, there are less people who need the program, and the program can get even more effective.
After a few election cycles of this, we won't even recognize government. In fact, they may change the name to something like protectorate or the council of help and justice.
