It's very important. Before my daughter left for college, I went into her room. She was packing her boxes and things for school. She was now grown up and ready to set up to live a life on her own there in college.
Mom, she said, half laughing and also with tears. And then I told her, you're going to cry, aren't you? I smiled, maybe just a little. She said, maybe just a little.
Then I told her, before you go, promise me this. She looked up to me. Promise me you'll be kind. I told her, promise me you will eat three foods and you'll live your life to the fullest. Promise me you'll always call home, even if it's just to say hi to your daddy and your mommy. She looked at me tight and she said, promise me. Crying tears of joy.
The house had been quiet since she left. There was no one to trouble anyone or to curse, to destroy things. But I also hear her voice say, hi mom. I know wherever she is, she's keeping to her promise. And I love her so much.
