Photographer in Action: Studio Series / Fotógrafo en Acción: Serie de Estudio [Eng-Esp]

Hello dear Black and White community,

This was my advanced photography exam. I had planned another series, but my model didn’t show up (I still haven’t forgiven them 😅). I had to improvise, and this experience taught me an important lesson: there will always be challenges, and you have to learn to solve them without giving up.

I asked my friend Cris, who is also a photographer, to help me. He usually doesn’t like having his photo taken, so I decided to do a photographer-in-action series with him. I got inspired by two of my favorite photographers: Yousuf Karsh and Platon. Karsh taught me how to show strength, character, and drama; Platon showed me the power of simplicity, how to remove distractions so the focus is entirely on the subject.

I set up the lighting: my favorite, Rembrandt, with one flash at 45° almost sideways for dramatic effect, and another flash with a stripbox and grid at 90° to fill shadows. I showed him some reference photos, and the process went as expected.

I’m proud to have overcome the obstacles, to continue exploring studio photography, and to gain confidence using flash. It used to feel complicated, but now I enjoy experimenting and learning.

I finished the course with passing grades, which motivates me even more to keep following this crazy path called photography. My message to everyone: let things flow, put your heart into what you do, and follow your passion. When you dedicate yourself, things turn out well.

Hola querida comunidad en Blanco y Negro

Este fue mi examen de fotografía avanzada. Tenía planeado otra serie, pero mi modelo me falló (aún no se lo perdono 😅). A falta de eso, tuve que improvisar, y esta experiencia me enseñó algo importante: siempre habrá inconvenientes y hay que aprender a resolverlos, sin rendirse.

Le pedí a mi amigo Cris, que también es fotógrafo, que me ayudara. Él no suele gustarle que le tomen fotos, así que pensé en hacerle una serie de fotógrafo en acción. Me inspiré en dos de mis fotógrafos favoritos: Yousuf Karsh y Platon. Karsh me enseñó a mostrar fuerza, carácter y dramatismo; Platon, la simplicidad en la puesta en escena, cómo limpiar distracciones y centrar la mirada en el sujeto.

Preparé la iluminación: mi favorita, Rembrandt, con un flash a 45° casi lateral para crear dramatismo, y otro flash con stripbox y grilla a 90° para rellenar sombras. Le mostré algunas referencias y el proceso fluyó como esperaba.

Estoy orgulloso de haber salido adelante a pesar de los inconvenientes, de seguir explorando la fotografía de estudio y de ir ganando confianza con el uso del flash. Antes me parecía complicado, ahora juego con él y disfruto aprendiendo.

Terminé el curso con notas aprobatorias, lo que me motiva aún más a seguir con esta locura que es la fotografía. Mi mensaje para todos: dejen que todo fluya, pongan ganas en lo que hagan y sigan su pasión. Cuando se hace con dedicación, todo termina bien.
