The Sapien Loop Series has over two hundred characters. The story takes each character on a journey. Many of their journeys are intertwined, but each character experiences them and the story differently.

This series of posts works through the characters in alphabetical order. We can see from their journeys how the characters are shaped over time. Their journeys also offer a recap and summary of the main plots of the story. I hope you enjoy them and find them useful.

Alex

Alex was a Downs resident. He was known for his collection of pineapple shirts. Prior to the collapse of Sapey, Alex ran the Downs Region branch of the Fruit Company. The Fruit Company was responsible for hiring fruit pickers and providing vehicles to carry and collect the fruit. He helped Orcille acquire a vehicle to venture into the Central Agricultural Zone. After the collapse of Sapey, he became the new self-appointed owner of the Fruit Company.

Alex was responsible for encouraging the residents of Downs to drink fruit juice when the water was contaminated. His efforts saved lives and prevented illness in many of the Downs residents. Alex was considered one of the senior leaders in the post-collapse world. He attended most of the main meetings and was consulted on major decisions.

Alma Bramley

Alma was the younger brother of Jason Bramley, one of the governors during the first collapse of Sapey. Alma was secretly involved in a back-breeding programme. She and her back-bred son, Jimbo, lived with an old couple in a small town outside of Adoy City.

Everything changed when the Government ordered all residents of Sapey to relocate to the cities. Alama and Jimbo were at risk again. Fortunately, the old couple had connections to a governor located in West City.

To escape detection, Alma and Jimbo were relocated to the West District House of Divine Knowledge. They were not safe for long. Enforcers stormed the House of Divine Knowledge. Along with other mothers and their children, Alma and Jimbo hid in an area beneath the temple basement. When the situation had settled down, they left the area.

Alma remained at the House of Divine Knowledge for the rest of her life. Jimbo moved to the new Adoy Region. The Linap and the Sapien genes merged again. This was how some Sapiens obtained the ability to shapeshift.

Angelo

Angelo was the clone of the Head Philosopher who was buried in manure inside a temple. The weight of the manure caused the temple to collapse into an underground tunnel. The body of the Head Philosopher was taken by the underground Linap cult to their underground city. They considered him some form of messenger, and his body was worshipped.

Around a hundred years later, the cult found a way to clone the Head Philosopher. The clone was named Angelo. Angelo suffered from poor health. To avoid physical contact and protect his health, he was kept in a glass room inside the cult’s underground temple. Angelo became the official leader of the cult and was given the title of High Philosopher. Angelo appeared to have a connection to the Linap he was cloned from. He had visions about the outside world.

Arthur

Arthur was married to Sophie and was the father to Eugene and Freddy. After Eugene graduated from his enforcer course, he and the rest of his family moved to Downs. Arthur got a job as a mechanic and trained his son, Freddy, to join him in the same line of work.

Arville

Arville.jpg

Arville was trained in the Cellrebrum training centre to become a Head Enforcer, but he failed the course. He acted unethically in a simulated challenge. This led to his initial arrest. He was not held for long because he had technically not broken any laws, as it was only a simulation. Collingswaggle visited him. He offered him an opportunity to be an enforcer in Adoy. He believed he was ideal to deal with the possible disturbances that were already brewing.

Arville quickly rose to the rank of senior enforcer, and he had his sights on becoming commander and then Head Enforcer. His opportunity came when two girls went missing after school. He arrested a suspect named Morgan. He threatened to throw a young girl, Darlene, off a building to find the location of another suspect, Victor. He found Victor arguing with Commander Vulay. He shot Victor in the back, killing him. He claimed he was protecting Vulay.

Arville interrogated suspects Morgan and Denise. He manipulated Morgan into confessing he was involved in the kidnapping. He tricked him into believing he was helping his daughter, Denise.

Arville proceeded to interrogate Denise, but she responded aggressively, denying any abuse from her father, Morgan. He used this to imply that Denise was a willing participant in the kidnapping. This was enough evidence to have both of them convicted by the Head Enforcer. Vulay was also convicted of helping and protecting the kidnappers.

Arville was congratulated and celebrated as a hero. He was promoted to commander, taking Vulay’s place. He still had unfinished business with Vulay, Denise, and Orcille, who was also detained with them.

After Vulay had been sent to Cellrebrum, Arville tried to attack Denise in her cell. Orcille came to her rescue by grabbing him through the bars. This just infuriated Arville. The next day, he came back for revenge on Orcille. He, along with a few other guards, attacked Orcille. They hit him with their batons, and Arville tased him until he was paralysed. Arville went on to sexually assault Orcille.

Pardi, Orcille’s father, found out about the assault. He wanted revenge. Pardi arranged with the Head Enforcer to have Arville sent to Cellrebrum to help Vulay with her rehabilitation. However, Arville did not know that he was also going to be assessed. Arville took this new opportunity to torment Vulay, who was drugged and hallucinating. Arville pretended to be Victor. He claimed he wanted to obtain more information from Vulay, but he was actually more interested in assaulting her. Dr. Cortex, the head of the rehabilitation centre, put an end to his attempts. He also considered him to have failed the secret assessment.

Arville was sent to the Capital Region. Pardi wanted Orcille to exact revenge on him. Orcille did want to do that. He gave Arville a chance to die with minimal pain, but Arville attacked Orcille. Orcille easily overcame his attack. The technicians came and subdued him. This led to a long series of painful tests and experiments, which eventually killed Arville.

Atlas

Atlas was stocking the refrigerator when he was unexpectedly promoted to the role of head of the Economic Institute. Atlas was clearly underqualified for the job, but that was the point. He was to become a puppet for James and the Hat Lady.

His first task was to announce the creation of new coins to replace the coins minted with Waldo’s face on them. These new coins were no longer made of precious metals.

Atlas was also responsible for announcing the results of the vote on allowing the genetic modification of the next generation of Linap.

Atlas was the chair for the judgement of those accused of sabotaging the stadium and at least in part responsible for all those who died.

When Tiberius became governor, Atlas was relieved of his position. Twaldi was once again named the head of the Economic Institute.

August Rezif

August.jpg

August was a first-generation new Linap. He had the enhanced intelligence from the serum but did not suffer from the other ailments that plagued the next and all later generations. August took over the ownership of the Rezif Pharmaceutical Company. He came up with the idea to create the two new species, Sapiens and Sapiods. He convinced Marlon Carvaress to help him do so.

August’s true motives were to advance genetic engineering so that he could extract DNA from Sentray eggs discovered in the North. He wanted to extract the genes that had advanced healing properties and would make him almost immortal. He succeeded in extracting the DNA, but it also changed his physical appearance. He became considerably taller and more lizard-like in appearance. This forced him to hide his identity.

August knew he would have to eventually change his appearance, as he could not live forever with the same identity. Over the years he took on many different characters; these include Governor Cromley, head of the Economic Institute Randall, head of the Economic Institute Senyek, and resource manager Colin. This made him one of the most powerful figures in Sapey for a thousand years.

Bastion

Bastion was a robot built by Octavius Spiro. He was his assistant in the Lake Region. Bastion was reassigned to the upcoming rehabilitation centre to be located in the region. Bastion operated using an early version of the Jennifer AI software.

Polly joined Bastion after she was turned into a cyborg. Bastion was responsible for helping her adjust to her new robotic components. The Sentray attacked the Lake Region. Unfortunately, Bastion, along with fellow robot Bellamy, was destroyed when Jennifer prevented them from escaping.

Belford

Belford was a large robot built after the Sentray attacked the Lake Region. Octavius Spiro built Belford using the parts he salvaged from Bastion and Bellamy. Belford was considerably less sophisticated than both Bastion and Bellamy, as an AI program did not assist him. Belford helped Octavius retrieve the seaweed to make the treatment for the Downs residents.

Bertram

Bertram was a recruit at the enforcing training centre in Cellrebrum. He and Carlos were caught eating chocolate cake at the canteen because they did not want to eat leek pie for lunch.

Bellamy

Bellamy was a robot built by Octavius Spiro. In the Lake Region, he worked with another robot named Bastion. Bellamy helped Jennifer communicate with the AI Jennifer chip in her brain. Bellamy did not survive the Sentray attack when Jennifer prevented him and Bastion from escaping. However, some of his parts live on in another robot named Belford.

Benny/L11

Benny was the nosy technician who worked with Demadrian and Jenna’s tunnel exploration team. After Demadrian returned to the surface, Benny formed a close bond with Jenna. They explored the underground cities that they had discovered. His bond with Jenna grew so strong that she wanted him to be frozen with them when the enforcers attacked. Benny was deceptively highly intelligent. This was somewhat masked by his social awkwardness.

Brian (North Guard)

Brian was a senior guard at the Alset facility in the North Region. He was ordered by Patricia Alset to investigate her nephew, Demadrian Alset’s activities at the facility. Brian led operations that caused the death of Demadrian’s test subjects, whom he had become attached to. In a rage, Demadrian killed Brian.

Camilla Alset

Camilla was Phallia’s oldest daughter. After the destruction of Carrington City, she became the leader of the western underground city.

Candice

Candice was the female Linap sent to kill Lily’s family. She and another Linap named Clyde succeeded in killing Lily’s parents, but Lily and her sister managed to hide using their special ability. Eventually Lily tracked down both Candice and Clyde. They were both punished but not killed.

Cellrebrum Canteen Worker

The canteen worker was a witness in the simulated investigation of the stolen items in the Cellrebrum training centre.

Captain/Commander Cecil

Captain Cecil was the leader of the western underground Linap guards. Flint sent him and a patrol of guards to help the east tribes search for the missing frozen Linap. His patrol encountered the missing Linap south of Location 3 near the eastern mountain range.

His patrol escorted the missing Linap to the Downs Region. As a reward for his success, Miro promoted Cecil to commander of the guards and enforcers. Unofficially, he had become more powerful than Head Enforcer Eugene.

Captain of the Guards in the North

The captain of guards helped end the rebellion in the North District. Chief Rundo assigned the captain to the North District to maintain the peace. Sanguine was uncomfortable with the captain’s role and power in the North District. After Sanguine’s family was attacked, Sanguine had the captain killed.

Carlos

Carlos was a recruit at the enforcing training centre in Cellrebrum. He and Bertram were caught eating chocolate cake at the canteen because they did not want to eat leek pie for lunch.

Cella

Cella was the artificial intelligence software developed and used by the Carvaress Company. It was mostly used to rapidly gather and compile information found on the internet to help answer questions asked by Pardi Carvaress. Cella was also used to monitor activity and Carvaress equipment. The Jennifer artificial intelligence software was based off Cella’s design.

Charles Leaw

Charles Leaw was the owner of the Leaw Food Company. He was also one of the first governors of Sapia/Sapey.

Chief Serinan

Chief Serinan was the chief of the North District and Sanguine’s father. He was killed in the rebellion.

Chief Strawly

Chief Strawly was Agriah’s last chief. He ran in the district’s first election against Vector the Ventriloquist and was easily defeated.

Claire

Claire was a scientist and medical expert working at the Capital Medical Centre. She discovered that Trisomy-21 was a genetic condition, and she invented a blood test to detect it. Her younger brother Jonah had the Trisomy-21 abnormality in his genes. Claire was one of the earliest arrivals to the Downs Region, where she dedicated the rest of her life to helping Sapiens with Trisomy-21.

Class Teacher in the VR World

Eugene was supposed to meet the class teacher in the virtual simulation, but she had been killed before he could meet her.

Clyde

Clyde was the male Linap sent to kill Lily’s family. He and another Linap named Candice succeeded in killing Lily’s parents, but Lily and her sister managed to hide using their special ability. Eventually Lily tracked down both Clyde and Candice. They were both punished but not killed.

Colin

Colin was the resource manager in the Downs Region. He was in charge of managing the region’s resources as well as resources that were salvaged from other regions. Colin was considered an important part of the Downs leadership team. Colin arrived in Downs not long before the Sentray attacked all the other regions. It was later revealed that he was another of August Rezif’s personas.

Collingswaggle

Collingswaggle.jpg

Collingswaggle was a representative for the Cellrebrum Region. He was later elected as a governor. Collingswaggle was a close friend and on-and-off-again lover of Pardi Carvaress. He helped Pardi increase his influence over the Sapey Government and played a key role in ousting Governor Lily.

Collingswaggle used the events that occurred in Adoy to trigger a vote of ‘No Confidence’ in the Government. This vote was a success and triggered a Governors Election.

Collingswaggle wanted nine representatives affiliated with the Business Sector to take governor positions. This was to secure them a voting supermajority. He was furious when it appeared Pardi had formed an alliance with Governor Lily, which appeared to thwart this attempt. This was not the case. Collingswaggle obtained the nine positions he wanted, and Pardi managed to win Lily’s trust. Arguably, a bigger victory than Collingswaggle had hoped to achieve.

For Pardi to maintain Lily’s trust, Collingswaggle needed to become distant from Pardi. This distance did not last. The Government and the Carvaress Company had been receiving reports of dead Sapes. Pardi claimed, based on the results of his company’s test, that the Sapes had been poisoned by dust from the wastelands, which had contaminated the Sapes’ water supply. Pardi claimed a solution needed to be added directly to the water supplies of the regions. Collingswaggle and Lily showed full support for Pardi’s proposed solution.

The next day, Collingswaggle was called to another urgent meeting with Pardi, the governors, and other relevant leaders in the Business Sector. There had been a serious train crash on the Sapien Loop. Such an occurrence had never occurred before. Collingswaggle blamed the previous Government for overspending on ‘rights’, which caused the Sapien Loop infrastructure to deteriorate. This angered Lily, who was disappointed that Pardi did not try to correct him.

It was not long before another emergency meeting was called. This time because of the major act of arson in the Jeed Region. Governor John wanted to blame the incident on the cutback on ‘rights’. Collingwaggle mocked him. Pardi linked the arsonist’s behaviour to access to the Southern Agricultural Zone. He claimed she must have been exposed to the contamination. This made his case for developing his solution even stronger.

It was almost time for the General Election. Collingswaggle had authorised the return of Vulay to Adoy to become the new Head Enforcer. He was impressed with the extent of her obedience. He also thought it would be good publicity for his election campaign to highlight the success of the Cellrebrum Rehabilitation Centre. Collingswaggle managed to win his seat as a representative for Cellrebrum and a position as governor in the Government.

Chaos had broken out in Adoy and Jeed. There was a rumour spreading that the solution being placed in the water supply was actually poison intended to harm or even kill the Sapiens. Collingswaggle pushed through legislation enabling the death penalty to be sentenced to anyone accused of spreading misinformation. This law change led to Lily’s arrest and ‘execution’.

Collingswaggle was the strongest voice opposing Dratsab and Rotiart’s bill to ban the House of Divine Knowledge. When the governors voted, he fell short of obtaining the supermajority to stop it. The vote went to the representatives, and their bill was passed. This led to widespread protests and then riots across almost all the regions.

Collingswaggle went to Cellrebrum to obtain Jennifer’s help in containing the riots. This meeting went badly for Collingswaggle. Jennifer, through Zolam, told Collingswaggle she wanted representation in Government. Initially, Collingswaggle laughed it off but soon realised she was serious. She said she was going to implant a chip in Collingswaggle’s brain to control him. Collingswaggle’s guards shot and killed Zolam. However, the threat from Jennifer had still not been averted. Therefore, the guards turned on Collingswaggle and killed him to prevent Jennifer from using him.

Commander in the No-Go Zone

The commander caught Sylvie and her son Tony in the no-go zone (part of the area that later became known as the wastelands). He assigned an enforcer to escort them safely to the House of Divine Knowledge in the West District.

Cornelius Turbo

Cornelius was the High Philosopher for the underground cult. He discovered the body of the West Head Philosopher, who was buried in manure, in the short story ‘Down But Not Out’. He preserved the body, and a century later, a clone was made from this body.

Cult Members

Not all the residents that escaped underground were satisfied with the Alset leadership. They broke off into several underground cities. The cult was one of these groups. The cult members fo
