I hadn't read this book in many years, exactly since I was in high school, and look, I'm already in my sixties, so that was a long time ago, but I recently came across this story again and didn't want to miss the opportunity to reread it, although I confess that I spent a few days with an emotional burden after reading the last chapters. >Yo tenía muchos años sin leer este libro, exactamente desde que estaba en la escuela secundaria y miren que yo ya soy una mujer sexagenaria, así que eso fue hace mucho tiempo, pero recientemente volví a encontrarme con esta historia y no quise perder la oportunidad de releerla, aunque les confieso que pasé algunos días con una carga emocional después de leer los últimos capítulos.
The story begins when Esteban Trueba falls in love with the eldest daughter of a wealthy family, however the girl dies in an attack that was aimed at her father. Esteban has some land in which he decides to invest money and soon begins to generate a lot of income and when he becomes a rich man he returns to the city, this time to get engaged to the youngest daughter of the family, Clara, an extraordinary girl because she has some clairvoyance gifts, in this way the book tells the history of the family over three generations, we learn the story of Blanca (the daughter of the Truebas) who falls in love with a young socialist, and later the story of Alba (daughter of Blanca and granddaughter of Esteban) who suffers all the onslaught of political, social and cultural repression that was experienced in Chile during the years of dictatorship after the coup d'état against President Salvador Allende and the rise to power of Augusto Pinochet.
La historia comienza cuando Esteban Trueba se enamora de la hija mayor de una familia rica, sin embargo la chica muere en un atentado que iba dirigido a su padre. Esteban tiene unas tierras a las que decide invertirle dinero y pronto comienza a generar muchos ingresos y cuando se vuelve un hombre rico vuelve a la ciudad en esta ocasión para comprometerse con la hija menor de la familia, Clara, una chica extraordinaria pues tiene algunas dotes de clarividencia, de esta manera el libro narra la historia de la familia a lo largo de tres generaciones, conocemos la historia de Blanca (la hija de los Trueba) quien se enamora de un joven socialista, y posteriormente la historia de Alba (hija de Blanca y nieta de Esteban) la cual sufre todos los embates de la represión política, social y cultural que se vivió en Chile durante los años de dictadura tras el golpe de estado contra el presidente Salvador Allende y la llegada al poder de Augusto Pinochet.
At first, reading this novel is almost surreal because it has a lot of magical realism, so you practically feel like you're reading a fairy tale because we see the world from Clara's point of view when she was a little girl thirsty for adventure, with a mind stimulated by her uncle's adventure book, but at the same time we also learn about her traumas, such as having involuntarily witnessed the autopsy of her older sister, something that left her deeply shocked. Clara is by far my favorite character in the entire book because despite being a woman of very few words, she knew exactly what to say at the right time, she was a faithful wife and an exemplary mother who never abandoned her family, not even when she died, and despite being a woman of fragile and ethereal appearance, she had an impressive strength of spirit.
Al inicio la lectura de esta novela es casi surrealista ya que tiene mucho realismo mágico, así que prácticamente te sientes leyendo un cuento de hadas porque vemos el mundo desde el punto de vista de Clara cuando era una niña sedienta de aventuras, con una mente estimulada por un libro de aventuras de su tío, pero al mismo tiempo también conocemos sus traumas, como el hecho de haber presenciado involuntariamente la necropsia de su hermana mayor, algo que la dejó muy impactada. Clara es a todas luces mi personaje favorito de todo el libro porque a pesar de ser una mujer de muy pocas palabras, sabía exactamente qué decir en el momento justo, fue una esposa fiel y una madre ejemplar que nunca desamparó a su familia, ni siquiera cuando murió, y a pesar de ser una mujer de apariencia frágil y etérea, tenía una fortaleza de espíritu impresionante.
Another very notable aspect of the plot is the strength and importance of the women in the story, who have had to go through very difficult changes and circumstances. In fact, I remember that one of my favorite things to read was that a prostitute named Tránsito befriended Esteban (who was sexist and conceited) and on one occasion she asked him for a loan to buy a dress. He gave her money with no hope of getting it back, but over time she became so rich that she was not only able to pay him back but also became the owner of her own business. In addition, it was thanks to her and the power he had gained over the years that he, Esteban Trueba, was able to get his granddaughter back. So this is an example of how we should never underestimate anyone, and that many times the solution to a problem can come from the person you least expect.
Otro aspecto muy destacable en la trama es la fortaleza y la importancia de las mujeres en la trama, las cuales han tenido que pasar por cambios y circunstancias muy difíciles. De hecho recuerdo que una de las cosas que más me gustó leer fue que una chica prostituta llamada Tránsito hizo amistad con Esteban (quién era machista y engreído) y en una ocasión ella le pidió dinero prestado para comprase un vestido, él le dio dinero sin esperanzas de recuperarlo, pero con el tiempo ella se hizo tan rica que no solo pudo devolver el dinero sino que se convirtió en la dueña de su propio negocio, además fue gracias a ella y el poder que había obtenido a lo largo de los años que él, Esteban Trueba, pudo recuperar a su nieta, así que esta es una muestra de que nunca debemos subestimar a nadie, y que muchas veces la solución a un problema puede venir de quien menos imaginas.
Through the experiences of the Trueba family, Isabel Allende denounces social injustice, inequality, and political violence through her characters, reflecting in the pages of her book the entire social and political conflict that took place in Chile from the late 1970s until the end of the dictatorship.
A través de la experiencia de la familia Trueba, Isabel Allende denuncia la injusticia social, la desigualdad y la violencia política a través de sus personajes, reflejando en las páginas de su libro todo el conflicto social y político que se vivió en Chile desde finales de los años 70 hasta que culminó la dictadura.
The House of the Spirits is not only a book to entertain you, it is a book to remember history and reflect, it is an example of resilience and courage, proof that pride (reflected in Esteban Trueba) brings nothing but destruction, that money is not always synonymous with power and that many times the strength you need to resist comes from within yourself,
La Casa de los Espíritus no solo es un libro para entretenerte, es un libro para recordar la historia y reflexionar, es un ejemplo de resiliencia y valentía, una prueba de que la soberbia (reflejada en Esteban Trueba) no trae sino destrucción, que el dinero no siempre es sinónimo de poder y que muchas veces la fuerza que necesitas para resistir viene de tu propio interior,
