I've never been very skilled at board games, but if there's one thing I like to do to kill time and try to distract myself during the numerous power outages in this city, it's playing dominoes with my husband. We have a lot of fun trying to make strategic plays, even though neither of us is an expert or has much knowledge. >Nunca he sido ducha en cuestiones de juegos de mesa, pero si hay algo que me gusta hacer para matar el tiempo y tratar de distraerme las numerosas veces en que se va la energía eléctrica en esta ciudad es jugar dominó con mi esposo, nos divertimos muchísimo tratando de hacer jugadas estratégicas aunque ninguno de los es experto o tiene demasiados conocimientos.
During my youth, I remember not really enjoying playing this popular board game for the simple reason that there's always someone who starts criticizing you for making a mistake, even after you've repeatedly said you don't know how to play. But I remember one time an older gentleman insisted on playing with me, and as soon as I started, I was very lucky because all my moves worked out well. Then he said to me, "So you said I didn't know how to play?" haha 🤣
Durante mi juventud recuerdo que no me gustaba mucho jugar este popular juego de mesa por la sencilla razón de que siempre hay alguien que empieza a recriminarte por hacer mal determinada jugada, aún y cuando en reiteradas oportunidades has dicho que no sabes jugar, pero recuerdo una ocasión en que un señor mayor me insistió mucho en jugar conmigo y en cuento empecé a jugar tuve mucha suerte porque todas las jugadas me salían bien, entonces él me dijo “¿No y que no sabía jugar?” jaja 🤣
Something really fun I have to mention is that in Venezuela, the country where I live, we give funny names to some dominoes or to certain plays. For example, "la cochina" is the double six, and I suppose they call it that because it looks like a sow nursing her piglets, and when someone says "aquí meterieron una cabra" (they put a goat in here) it means that someone played a domino that doesn't belong with the others 😄.
Algo muy divertido que tengo que mencionar es que en Venezuela, el país donde vivo, le ponemos nombres graciosos a algunas piezas del dominó o a algunas jugadas. Por ejemplo, “la cochina” es el doble seis, y supongo que lo llaman así porque da la impresión de ser una cerda amamantando a sus cochinitos, y cuando alguien dice “aquí metieron una cabra” significa que alguien puso una pieza que no corresponde con otras 😄.
It's also common for people to jokingly accuse each other of cheating 🤣, my husband, for example, is always accusing me of it, but we have some great moments of leisure that keep us away from the tedium and boredom while we wait for the electricity to return, which is usually in about three hours. This also allows us to take a break from technology and social media, and reminisce about our younger days. This quality time helps us reconnect and break out of our routine, something I value and appreciate despite the inconvenience of not having electricity for a few hours.
También es común que entre risas la gente se acuse de hacerse trampa mutuamente 🤣, mi esposo por ejemplo siempre me acusa de eso, pero pasamos buenos momentos de esparcimiento que nos alejan del tedio y el aburrimiento en lo que retorna la energía eléctrica, que usualmente es en unas tres horas. Además esto también nos permite descansar un poco de la tecnología y las redes sociales, recordando además los años de juventud. Este tiempo de calidad nos ayuda a reconectar y salir de la rutina, algo que valoro y aprecio a pesar de la molestia que causa el hecho de no tener luz eléctrica por unas horas.
