Greetings to everyone in the Worldmappin community! Today I'm joining you here to share with you a new tourism review. A few months ago, I started writing several articles showcasing some of the most important tourist attractions in Valencia, Carabobo. Today, after some time away from the city, I've returned to my beloved state to see my family and, of course, visit some places I hadn't had time to visit before. So, here's a look at my visit to the "Alexis Mujica" Center for Living Arts, also known as CAVAM. Let's get started.
The CAVAM is located in the historic center of Valencia, across from Plaza Bolívar, next to the Archbishop's Palace and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Socorro. It's a rather significant building (impossible to miss), considering its proximity to other buildings and spaces of great historical value. Its history also stems from this, as this mansion was formerly the colonial cemetery adjacent to Valencia Cathedral. At that time, every square consisted of a church or cathedral and its respective cemetery. Over time, other buildings of equal value were added, but that cemetery space became the property of the Tarbes family. This was in the 19th century, during the period when Venezuela was already a republic, so the mansion reflects a republican architectural style.
¡Saludos a todos en la comunidad de Worldmappin! El día de hoy me uno por aquí para compartir con ustedes una nueva reseña de turismo. Hace unos meses había comenzado la redacción de varios artículos dónde mostraba algunos de los lugares turísticos más importantes de Valencia, Carabobo. Hoy, luego de algún tiempo fuera de la ciudad he vuelto a mi querido estado para poder ver a mi familia y por supuesto, ir a algunos lugares que en su momento no había tenido el tiempo de visitar. Así que aquí les presento lo que fue mi visita al Centro de Artes Vivas "Alexis Mujica", también conocido cómo, CAVAM. Empecemos con ello.El CAVAM se encuentra ubicado en el casco histórico de Valencia, frente a la Plaza Bolívar, al lado del Palacio Arzobispal, la Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Socorro. Siendo entonces un edificio bastante relevante (he imposible de pasar desapercibido) tomando en cuenta su cercanía con otros edificios y espacios de gran valor histórico. Precisamente su historia también nace de ello, pues antiguamente esta casona era el cementerio colonial que colindaba a la Catedral de Valencia. Para aquel momento, toda plaza se constituía con una iglesia o catedral y su respectivo cementerio. Con el tiempo se añadieron otros edificios de igual valor, pero ese espacio del cementerio pasó a ser propiedad de la familia Tarbes. Eso fue en el siglo XIX, en el período de tiempo en el que Venezuela ya era una república, por lo que la casona responde a un estilo arquitectónico republicano.
The latter is, for me, one of the reasons why it is so pleasant to visit this mansion, as it boasts an architecture that blends colonial and republican style. Its entrance through the vestibule, a central courtyard that provides light (and, at one time, ventilation), large windows and doors, beautifully crafted ornamentation (columns and false Corinthian columns, ceiling details, tiled floors of various shapes and colors, etc.), and the layout of the house's various sections. Of course, as visitors, we cannot see the entire house. The point is that all of this demonstrates the foreign influences on the style of the mansion. After the Tarbes family, in the 20th century, the mansion became the Casa de Amigos de Valencia (Friends of Valencia House) and served as a private club reserved for people of a certain level and status. It was abandoned and later restored as an antiques center that housed some objects, furniture, books, and other items from the period.
The first time I visited this mansion was back in 2016, when I was a university student, and thanks to a class, we decided to see it. It housed the aforementioned items: a series of antiques from the Friends of Valencia Society. For the following years, the mansion remained closed and only recently reopened. Today, it is in very good condition. It hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions and holds cultural, political, and religious events. It currently houses two spaces: the Arturo Michelena Gallery and the Radio América Museum. In the first, we'll find a room displaying some paintings (portraits of Arturo Michelena, Simón Bolívar, Antonio Herrera Toro) by Braulio Salazar and sculptures by Alexis Mujica. Incidentally, the mansion's name is in reference to this Venezuelan artist.
Lo último señalado es para mí uno de los motivos por los cuales resulta tan agradable visitar esa casona pues posee una arquitectura entre colonial y lo republicano; Su respectiva entrada a través del zaguán, patio central que otorga entrada de luz (y en su momento, ventilación), grandes ventanales y puertas, ornamentaciones bellamente trabajadas (columnas y falsas columnas estilo corintio, detalles del techo, el suelo de azulejos de varias formas y colores, etc) y la disposición de los sectores en la casa. Claro, cómo visitantes no podemos ver toda la casa. La cuestión es que todo eso demuestra las influencias del extranjero para la estilización de la casona. Luego de los Tarbes, en el siglo XX, la casona paso a ser la Casa de Amigos de Valencia y sirvió como un club privado reservado a personas de cierto nivel y estatus. Hasta que fue abandonada y posteriormente recuperada sirviendo cómo un centro de antigüedades que conservaba algunos objetos, muebles, libros y demás cosas de la época.La primera vez que visité esta casona fue por allá en el 2016, cuando estudiaba en la universidad y gracias a una materia decidimos ir a verla. Se encontraba lo anteriormente mencionado; una serie de antigüedades de la Sociedad Amigos de Valencia. Para los años siguientes, la casona permaneció cerrada y hasta hace poco volvió a abrir sus puertas. Hoy se encuentra realmente en muy buen estado. Exhibe exposiciones permanentes y temporales, se celebran eventos de carácter cultural, político y religioso. Actualmente cuenta con dos espacios: la Galería Arturo Michelena y el Museo Radio América. En la primera encontraremos una sala donde se exhiben algunas pinturas (retratos de Arturo Michelena, Simón Bolívar, Antonio Herrera Toro) por Braulio Salazar y esculturas de Alexis Mujica. Que por cierto, el nombre que se le colocó a la casona es en referencia a este artista plástico venezolano.

For those who don't know, this museum is dedicated to the oldest and most popular radio station in Carabobo: Radio América. It's been around for as long as the world has known and was beloved by the locals for its host, Ali Escorihuela. Finally, I must say that the tour was very good, thanks also to the on-site guides, Yosmary and Antonella. I enjoyed being able to re-enter CAVAM and see how, despite the fact that it's still (in theory) the same building and location as a few years ago, it's much more up-to-date. By the way, I was going to completely forget, but there they gave us some truly valuable books: Of Blues and Mists (volumes IV and V) by Guillermo Mujica Sevilla. The latter being a highly relevant chronicler of Carabobo, he left several writings about the Valencia del Rey and its aftermath. Para quien no lo sepa, ese museo está dedicado a la radio más antigua y popular de Carabobo: Radio América. Tiene todos los años del mundo y fue muy querida por las personas por su locutor Ali Escorihuela. Finalmente, debo decir que el recorrido fue muy bueno, gracias también a las guías del lugar, Yosmary y Antonella. Disfrute poder entrar de nuevo al CAVAM y ver cómo a pesar de que sigue siendo (en teoría) el mismo edificio y el mismo lugar de hace algunas años, pero mucho más actualizado. Por cierto, se me iba a olvidar por completo, pero allí nos regalaron algunos libros que son oro; De Azules y de Brumas (tomo IV y V) de Guillermo Mujica Sevilla. Este último siendo un cronista bastante relevante de Carabobo y que dejó varios escritos sobre la Valencia del Rey y posterior a ello.
