Murrua Trail Ku-ring Gai Chase NP orchid recce walk : August 8 2025

Had ideas to get out to look for early flowering spring orchids. Took a while to decide where to go - took the car to drive up the riad from where used to live.

Car is parked in an apartment block a little up the way. We have only one space in our block - I rent mine. Always puts a block in the way of doing stuff on the spur. Sure hope there is insurance for flood cover. A few inches of water on this lower level (my car in the corner)

Drove to Murrua Road access to Ku-ring Gai Chase NP - in the corner of the truck parking area is a cluster of greenhoods. This cluster is a bit deeper in than I have seen. Good news as the spot I used to see them got smashed

They are blunt greenhoods - pterostylis curta. Was hoping to see some open - it is the season

Pretty clear it is the season for red spider grevillea - a lot flowering

Also mimosa season - tricky to photograph. There is a leaf in focus

Pea flower time

Saw this flash of purple well off track - was hoping they ser sun orchids. More pea flowers on a climbing spike

Yellow pea flower

The ling leaf shape is good news - site of a leek orchid that got strimmed away last season and kicked over the year before. Maybe this year.

Plenty of hibbertia flowering too - also a hard photo subject. The yellow grabs the light and stops good focus

Walked a big slice of the main track as I recall seeing sun orchids near the end last year - do like flowers across the track photos - red spider grevillea again

Sydney boronia starting to show as I walked up the hill

Hakea flower posed across the track

New opener for the season - wax flower

Drumsticks flower - first for the season

Lambertia formosa

Stopped to take the photo of this scribbly gum - a great shape - and a surprise up above ground

The surprise - a snake orchid up high - cymbidium suave. Will be a hard photo subject when it flowers. Bring a ladder

Two tone pea flower

Track view looking down toward Cowan Creek

No luck finding sun orchids - did get a pink grevillea (adding to the grey whose photo was deleted - out of focus)

Photo across to the road down to Bobbin Head to show the pink and yellow flowers - spring is on its way

Leptospermum squarrosum flower is well ahead of schedule amd a few buds to open

Starburst flower - my name

NSW coral heath flower - new buds above

Heard the calls of the black cockatoos - got a photo of one - one of 3 pairs nothing away on fruit in one type of tree

Walked the grassed area next to the old age home. Has been mowed recently - as long as they do not mow again, these onion orchids will flower in the summer. With close to 10k steps done chose to not walk any of the other tracks. Going to do those next week

Spent the afternoon working on a nee product launch - an AI social media reply tool. Resting if it works across platforms. Created a bonus - launches next week

Dinner: Pizza
