First season leek orchid in Ku-ring Gai Chase NP : August 12 2025

A blue sky day - had an idea to catch a train and walk to a fire trail. Got the boots on and said "take the car". Did that and bar a missed turn got to the walk start before the train was leaving

Some days these choices make a lot of sense. The minute I saw the track I knew it was a mess - this front section used to be a bit of a bog

The.environmentally sensitive signs are new - yet last season they did a hazard reduction burn. Guess what? The orchids that were here were right where those signs are along the edge of the new trail.

Next sign is the next red flag. This is installed but the civil contractor - not by National Parks - screw what you want but do not come this way

They redid this track two years ago. This time the mane with the strimmer machine has mulched everything down to one inch. I thought the guideline was 9 cms - not here. One inch. The orchids thrive cloe to the track - wiped out - will take two seasons to recover

Red spider grevillea

Did find evidence of a leek orchid spike in a known location

The context photo shows why these will survive the hatchet job - mowing machine could not work around the shielding trees

Turned back early - had enough - lobelia dentata on the way back. They come up after fire - last season reduction burn

Walked off track about the point the yellow leek orchids showed in previous years - not last year - they got burned. Found this one leek orchid flowering - slim leek orchid

Prasophyllum brevilabre - a bit further off track than the one I saw last year

A bit closer up - and guess what? Flowering a few weeks earlier than normal

No idea what happened with this photo - maybe a.bit of zoom and maybe a texture background. Did hold a leaf behind to improve focus

Always like to find a 2nd flower - lobelia dentata also in a burned zone - a bit of a curl

Walked the side track beyond the sensitive area sign - goes to the top of the drop off down to the creek. Is a classic grevillea zone - flowers - Sydney boronia

A cluster of Sydney boronia

Close up

Pea flower in succulent form

A bit of light to work with mimosa flowers

Pick your favourite

Went off track for the wax flowers - too bad the bee action was high up above my head and coukd not get a photo in focus. Did wait a while

Saw this flash of yellow - not an orchid - maybe a pea flower ending

Grey spider grevillea

The best part of a non-windy day is one can get a photo of the small flannel flower. They are so delicate with a touch of pink - photo is not perfect but the flower is tiny at the sizenof a US penny

So pleased I chose to drive. Wouldnhave been so totally pushed to reach a fire trail so heavily treated after a 45 minute walk. That said - the one orchid was an early season surprise

Walked to shops when I got home - a few things needed and steps to gain

Dinner: BBQ chicken with airfryer chips and salad.

Did get next stage of smart replies product launch done - bonus pages
