Sydney Harbour walk around Balls Head Reserve : September 22 2025

A big Monday. Stock market move last week was massive. One of my close cycling friends died on the weekend - massive heart attack on the way to a ride.

Took the train to do what I do best on days like this - look for orchids - headed toward the city to walk Balls Head Reserve - photo from Waverton Station

View across to Berry Island where I walked a few weeks ago

I took photos then of HMAS Waterhen. An operating mine sweeper base named after the first Australian ship sunk in WWII

First geebung flowers for the season

Location shots - new signage

Mission today is to find bootlace orchids in a known location. Checked every host tree. Then checked the location instructions I sent to a friend at the time. Harbour view but not this tree

Pea flower with a red ridge

Got the right tree. The orchid grows up from the base. As you can see it has been tidied up by the leaf blower man OR someone has stolen the orchid. Both are likely

A few days ago I spied a cockatoo in a hole in a tree - 2nd time in a short time

Not quite a hole in the tree trunk but a hollow up top

Dyanella just starting to show

View of RedHat building in North Sydney from Froggatt Lookout

Banksia flowering

View to the city - Crown Casino on the right

View across to Anzac Bridge and the big church on the right

City and Harbour Bridge both in view

Harbour Bridge with both pylons and the controversial Blues Point tower in front

Each loop around the track offers different views of the city

Path drops down to pass in front of Quarantine boat depot - signage with the story

  • a few old cottages

And the old workshops

As I had walked most of the track on the other side a few weeks back chose to head back to station - found these orchids on the way - dedicated to my friend Kim

Things happen for a reason - met an old guy there who was sharing tales about arterial bypass surgery for aneurysm in his legs. Now I know how my friend died - the aneurysm was up higher

RIP Kim - we will miss your quirky humour at our Bike Friday events

Old style info board in Waverton station

Old style bus stop opposite the station

The walk was good. The chat about aneurysm saved me some research

Spent the afternoon catching up on the week's investing. Did cook chicken curry for my dinner - my wife did eggs for her
