Bearded orchids in Garigal NP - new season openings : September 25 2025

A few late nights and early walking from the noise in the apartment above is playing havoc. I go to bed after US markets open - after midnight - and get to listen door slamming from 5 am. That gets me in do nothing mode in the morning.

What to do? Simplify the day plans - drive up to walk St Ives edge of Garigal NP for a known spot for bearded orchids in a suburban reserve - purple bearded orchid

Somehow the council has decided to leave the verge that abuts the National Park as open ground - no mowing - orchids like it

Calochilus robertsonii

Three flowers in frame - marked

In the mown sections there were a few onion orchids budding. As you can see the main leaf got cut short - somehow there was enough structure for the flower to emerge - a bit windy for a photo in focus

This one has not frown straight out - got caught on the way up and may a loop

Walked the Cambourne Reserve loop - strelitzia in a garden. Was my army unit logo. Hard to believe that was over 50 years ago

Have walked the loop before - it is the asset protection zone between the houses and the bush. No orchid value - strings all garden grass plus a few escapees

Heard the rustle - monitor lizard moving slowly to the base of the tree - not quick enough to climb before the photo

A few more bearded orchids in the next verge reserve

Front on view - beak nose, basal glands looking back, small tape from the bottom of the labellum

Side on of a flower closing

Context photo for the walk down into the NP

Budding sun orchid along the track

Hibbertia flower

Continuing the yellow theme - pea flower

Orchid spikes - one of the dipodium - hard to ID at this stage other than the dark colour of the spike - maybe punctatum

Syndey boronia - low down made for a wind free photo chance

Back to yellow - structure is like dampiera but the colour is not purple. Might have to look it up

Note the similarities

Could not find the ant orchids I saw last walk - someone has dug them up - found another bearded orchid back in the reserve. This one stood only 3 inches tall - normally 4 times that

Side on closing

One Streetcare that works - got to say strimmer man was a bit tight to the ground - but the plan does work here

Yesterday mission was to collect some aged wine - the first bottle surprised me - vibrant cherry still and robust character - still alive - no browning - not bad for 16 years old

Went well with the Veal Marsala dinner - still working to get the recipe right
