Big walk day - 28 kms Sydney 7 Bridges walk : October 26 2025

A big day ahead. Booked in to walk the Sydney 7 Bridges Walk for Cancer Council. Walking in memory of my niece Colleen who succumbed to breast cancer after a long struggle. She leaves behind 3 young boys, a partner and a grieving family. My wife dropped me off

Started at Lane Cove - the closest village to where we live and also breaks up the hilly bits with some up front and some at the end

Wrote up my dedication to Colleen and got the photo. Start warking on a part cloudy and mild day. Nice. Not too many people starting from here - maybe 200

Will think about a theme as we go. Starting from Lane Cove and heading toward Crows Nest

One theme emerges quickly - the jacarandas have started this week. Reminds me of living in Pretoria, South Africa - Jacaranda City - I was born there and at high school there

Have walked some of this before - a diversion choice to drop down to Gore Creek

Knees not quite warmed up to walk on uneven steps but it is a quiet escape from the city

Grand bridge work to carry water pipes

Walked this bridge a few weeks back

Last time I walked down the creek below - can stay on the high side this time

Next village reached - one done

Always have to take a photo of strelitzia - my army symbol - 6 SA Infantry

First sighting of Sky Tower from the top of Waverton. My first walking companions in frame - the bright shirt man was 6 months ago completing his cancer treatments

The next bridge with yours truly the tramp look alike

Ferry crossing in front of the bridge

Across the front of the iconic Luna Park - not walked here before

Snap view of the Opera House from under the bridge

View of the first hotel I stayed in when I came to visit Sydney in 1999 - now the Shrangi La hotel - was ANA Hotel

Lord Nelson Hotel and brewery at the back of The Rocks - chose not to stop for a beer.

A mix of old and new

View across Walsh Bay to Anzac Bridge - the bridge after next

View from the top of Pyrmont Bridge - bridge 2 done

Another view back to Sky Tower - theme 2

Wharf 10 Pyrmont - my wife worked in that building for many months

Next village in the park in front of her building. From here all the paths are new to me

A few Sky Tower shots and fab skies

Different angles - same spot

Back two bridges sweeping left to where I walked from

Going to jump ahead - Anzac Bridge and a cargo ship

Back to jacarandas in Jones Bay

The arches of Anzac Bridge from below

Cricket match under way in Rozelle - the art work on the chimney stack for the tunnel exhausts

Old corner store and Victorian cottages in Lilyfield

Walked through Callan Park - a now closed women's mental health facility - grand buildings in lovely grounds and sad stories

A bit of fun in Rozelle village

View across some Aboriginal fish net art to Iron Cove Bridge

Iron Cove Bridge arches from below

Birkenhead Point - a friend lived here when I first arrived in Sydney

Views around from the bridge to the end point - under those tall buildings

Lovely old style house with immaculate garden work and bird nests

A skinny house for sale in Drummoyne

The start of the walk up Gladesville Bridge

Two views from the top of Gladesville Bridge - ahead to the end

And back to Harbour Bridge. It did rain over the top of the tall bridges - 2nd shower today

Loop under the bridge - was looking for an abseil rope to do a shortcut. Feet beginning to blister

Looking back under Gladesville Bridge

The next bridge crossing into Hunters Hill

Photo from the top of Fig Tree Bridge crossing the Lane Cove River and a jacaranda

Last view of the Harbour Bridge and Sky Tower

The Englishman had to take this photo with 4 kms to go on a 28 kms walk

Last water view for the walk and back to the grand water pipe bridge we saw earlier - the end is close

One monster hill coming up from the river - over a km long

Pass the gates of St Ignatius College - more commonly known as Riverview. Amazing grounds

And a final view of the city and Sky Tower

Chose not to do the diversion walk down to Tambourine Creek. That would be a hill too far

Made it to the end - a few blisters. My survivor friend was waiting there. He walked 22 kms and got a bus. Was nice to see a familiar face and have a chat.

And not long after the lady in the Panama hat and her son arrived. We have been tig-tagging since wharf 10 Pyrmont. She was happy to pose with the dancing ladies.

Last time I walked 40k steps when we moved house 2 years ago. Time before was 1974 in the army (40 kms then).

What made it different? I decided early on to walk non-stop just like we did on the 40 kms army walk

My wife picked me up. She had cooked beef stroganov for dinner. All I did was cook pasta and asparagus

My sister was happy I walked for her daughter. She donated

You could help by donating at https://mclnks.com/7bridges OR send me some HIVE or HBD with memo 7bridges - I will forward the funds to the Cancer Council charity
