I had been wanting to read The Alienist, by one of Brazil's most talented writers, for a long time. Machado de Assis was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1839 and became one of the greatest names in Brazilian literature.
Although his stories are set in the 19th century, his language and themes are surprisingly contemporary and easy to read. Although some expressions refer to that time, the richness of his vocabulary makes his books even more interesting.

Published in 1882, The Alienist tells the story of a psychiatrist who sets up a clinic to admit and study patients he deems mentally unbalanced.
The story takes place in Itaguaí, a city in the interior of Rio de Janeiro, where everyone knows each other. The main character is Doctor Simão Bacamarte, who decides to dedicate himself to psychiatry and founds Casa Verde, a mental hospital that initially treats patients who most people consider to be crazy.
However, little by little, Casa Verde began to receive even patients that most people did not consider to be crazy, but the doctor insisted that it was his duty to admit them for the sake of science in order to study them and find a cure.
Since the town was small, Dr. Bacamarte's admissions became a topic of conversation among the population, who began to question his methods.
At this point, a barber named Porfírio, who had political aspirations, became interested in the cause and began to foment a revolt.
Due to the commotion among the population, the discussion reached the City Council and even the police were called in to contain the revolt.
During the confusion, Dr. Bacamarte took the opportunity to argue and study the behavior of those who rebelled against his methods, eventually reevaluating them.
The entire story unfolds in a very attractive way and with several twists and turns that capture the reader's attention, in addition to being a humorous tale that also provides some laughs.
In the end, we are left with a reflection on what really is madness and what is simply human behavior, full of flaws and often self-interested and selfish.
Once again, it is surprising that the writer addresses this topic at a time when psychiatry was still developing and deals with the subject in such a humorous and provocative way.

Fazia tempo que eu queria ler O Alienista, de um dos escritores mais talentosos do Brasil. Machado de Assis nasceu no Rio de Janeiro, em 1839, e se tornou um dos maiores nomes da literatura brasileira.
Apesar de suas histórias se passarem no século XIX, sua linguagem e temas são surpreendentemente atuais e fáceis de ler. Apesar de algumas expressões remeterem àquela época, a riqueza do vocabulário torna seus livros ainda mais interessanres.
Publicado em 1882, O Alienista conta a história de um médico psiquiatra que monta uma clínica para internar e estudar seus pacientes que julga desequilibrados mentalmente.
A história se passa em Itaguaí, cidade do interior do Rio de Janeiro, onde todos se conhecem. O personagem principal é o Doutor Simão Bacamarte, que resolve se dedicar à psiquiatria e funda a Casa Verde, um hospício que atende inicialmente pacientes que a maioria entende como loucos.
No entanto, aos poucos, a Casa Verde começa a recolher até mesmo pacientes que a maioria não julgava como loucos, maa o doutor insistia que tinha o dever de interná-los pela Ciência afim de estudá-los e encontrar uma cura.
Como a cidade era pequena, as internações do Doutor Bacamarte se tornam assunto entre a população, que começa a questionar seus métodos.
Neste momento, um barbeiro chamado Porfírio, que tinha aspirações políticas, se interessa pela causa e começa a fomentar uma revolta.
Por conta da comoção da população, a discussão chega à Câmara dos Vereadores e até mesmo a polícia é acionada para conter a revolta.
Durante a confusão, o Doutor Bacamarte aproveita para argumentar e estudar o comportamento daqueles que se revoltam contra seus métodos, chegando a reavaliá-los.
Toda a história se desenrola de forma muito atrativa e com várias reviravoltas que prende a atençãondo leitor, além de ser um conto humorístico que também rende algumas risadas.
No fim, fica uma reflexão sobre o que realmente é loucura e o que é simplesmente o comportamento humano, cheio de falhas e não raramente interesseiro e egoísta.
De novo, surpreende que o escritor aborde este tema em uma época em que a psiquiatria ainda estava se desenvolvendo e trate o assunto de forma tão bem humorada e provocativa.
