Woodland photography and some deer

This post is a continuation from last week's photo wander. Once the sun was up I headed into the woods, as a nice amount of mist had permeated into the wooded areas.

I mentioned komorebi in my previous post, it's the Japanese word for light rays filtering through trees. There were light rays everywhere, it was very beautiful.

Some hinds were walking through the trees in the distance. I didn't want to disturb them, so I popped on my telephoto lens and took some shots as they breakfasted on some of the low hanging oak leaves.

Walking back into the open, I met this amazing stag. His new antlers looked gorgeous - all velvety and rounded. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the new antlers grow - it was only a few months back when they shed their old ones.

Wildlife photographers travel here from far and wide in the Autumn, to photograph the stags during the rutting season. I prefer them at this time of the year, when their antlers are covered in beautiful velvet and without the intense (and slightly terrifying) fighting.

By the time the rut arrives, he is going to be an impressive opponent. The velvet will fall away, and his antlers will be pointed and deadly.

The sun was well and truly up now. As I headed back to my bike, I took one last shot with my telephoto lens, of the beautiful backlit grasses.
