*The Urgent Need for Bicycle Safety in Cumaná's Shopping Centers/ La Necesidad Urgente de Seguridad para Bicicletas en los Centros Comerciales de Cumaná*
Que tal, Cycling. Como ciclista urbano en Cumaná, me encuentro a diario con una realidad que, si bien es común en muchas ciudades de Venezuela, no deja de ser frustrante: la falta de infraestructura y apoyo para quienes elegimos la bicicleta como medio de transporte. Es una lástima, porque nuestra ciudad, con su clima y geografía, tiene un potencial enorme para ser mucho más amigable con las dos ruedas. Mi mayor preocupación, y la de muchos ciclistas que conozco, es la seguridad de nuestras bicicletas, especialmente cuando necesitamos hacer una parada en lugares concurridos como los centros comerciales. Es el punto donde la vulnerabilidad se siente más palpable.

As an urban cyclist in Cumaná, I daily encounter a reality that, while common in many Venezuelan cities, is frustrating: the lack of infrastructure and support for those of us who choose cycling as a means of transportation. It's a shame, because our city, with its climate and geography, has enormous potential to be much more friendly to two-wheelers. My biggest concern, and that of many cyclists I know, is the safety of our bikes, especially when we need to stop at busy places like shopping malls. This is the point where vulnerability feels most palpable.
What's the point of pedaling to a destination if you don't have the peace of mind that your bike will be there when you get back? At the moment, the situation is daunting. I find myself constantly looking for poles, bars or any item where I can chain my bike, often with the feeling that I am in legal and security limbo. Most of the shopping centers in Cumana, to my chagrin, seem to have completely ignored the growing cycling community. There are no bike lanes connecting to them, let alone, designated and safe spaces to park bicycles. This not only discourages the use of bicycles, but also exposes our goods to constant theft.

Me veo constantemente buscando postes, rejas o cualquier elemento donde pueda encadenar mi bicicleta, a menudo con la sensación de que estoy en un limbo legal y de seguridad. La mayoría de los centros comerciales de Cumaná, para mi pesar, parecen haber ignorado por completo la creciente comunidad ciclista. No hay ciclovías que conecten con ellos, y mucho menos, espacios designados y seguros para estacionar bicicletas. Esto no solo desincentiva el uso de la bicicleta, sino que además expone nuestros bienes a robos constantes.

In the midst of this panorama, I want to highlight the praiseworthy exception that is Hyper Galerías. When I need to go to this mall, I do it with a tranquility that I do not find anywhere else in the city. They have understood the need, and have implemented a space, albeit modest, to park bicycles safely. This is not just a convenience; it is a recognition that cyclists are part of the clientele and deserve consideration. It is an example to follow, a beacon of hope in a sea of indifference. Bicycle security in shopping malls is not a whim; it is a necessity for several reasons.

Cuando necesito ir a ese centro comercial, lo hago con una tranquilidad que no encuentro en ningún otro lugar de la ciudad. Ellos han entendido la necesidad, y han implementado un espacio, aunque sea modesto, para estacionar bicicletas de forma segura. Esto no es solo una comodidad; es un reconocimiento de que los ciclistas somos parte de la clientela y merecemos consideración. Es un ejemplo a seguir, un faro de esperanza en un mar de indiferencia. La seguridad de las bicicletas en los centros comerciales no es un capricho; es una necesidad imperante por varias razones.

If shopping centers offer bicycle security, more people will be encouraged to use bicycles, reducing vehicular traffic, pollution, and demand for car parking. We cyclists are a growing market segment. Offering services for us means attracting and retaining customers who might otherwise choose to go to more bike-friendly locations. A shopping center that cares about bicycle safety demonstrates a commitment to the community and the environment, enhancing its image and reputation. Secure, well-guarded spaces deter thieves, protecting cyclists' investments and visitors' peace of mind. Bicycles are an inexpensive and accessible means of transportation for many people. Ensuring its safety promotes greater inclusion.
