Here in the Philippines, we have a lot of delicacies to offer to everyone, whether it's a heavy meal or a random snack you can have in the streets. We have a lot of local foods that are deeply rooted in our daily lives, and are commonly seen as street foods. I am here to highlight an ordinary night where the locals enjoy their snacks just beside the bustling streets of the city.
When we went to the city for a stroll, I couldn't help but observe the surroundings, especially on the sidewalks. Many street food vendors have their carts parked in front of the mall to attract customers seeking quick and affordable snacks.
I have seen people lining up at the carts, and some are already eating their chosen street foods. Some are already cooked so that you can eat them right away - no waiting time for cooking.
We have here the "Turo-turo Culture" where customers only point to the foods they want. It is also considered a social snack since you will get to eat in the carts with strangers, or your friends, and share some laughter and random conversations.
When we say street foods here in the Philippines, we offer a wide variety. We have the famous "Isaw" or the marinated chicken intestines, and "Betamax" or the chicken blood. Aside from them, we also have here the "Fish Ball, Kikiam, and Squid Ball," which are perfect when dunked in sweet and spicy sauce.
We also have the popular "Kwek-kwek" made from quail eggs, coated with flour. It's also best when served with sauce and vinegar. These are the common street foods you can see in the pictures I shared.
In reality, not all Filipinos enjoy street food. Aside from being the cheap snacks you can see in every corner of the city, it's also part of our culture and reflects our creativity in cooking and business.
