I know that nobody wants to be in a hospital, whether you are the one admitted or a family member. It's the worst feeling ever. The unending worries, sleepless nights, and the heart pounding in every step in the halls of the hospital. And those were exactly what I felt when my nephew was hospitalized recently.
He's the healthiest among his siblings. He's good in both sports and academics. And he had no health issues since birth. No hospitalization, no experience in injections or laboratories before. But everything changed when his cold and flu became serious. He was positive for Dengue. And that means he needs to be admitted to the hospital right away for close monitoring.
Of course, the whole family got shocked and felt like our world had turned upside down. This is something we are not prepared for, especially for the kids. And it was really hard to look at him lying in a hospital bed, knowing that he could be very active and playful at home.
But we chose to look after him with love and care so he could recover faster. The whole family made an effort to care for him in the hospital, and to bring in healthy foods to keep him energized.
And as for me, I was there for him every single day, from morning to night. Being in the hospital was boring; I know most of you would agree. Since we are in the ward with some other kids, I also get to see other young patients. And it's draining my sanity.
To keep me up and energized to look after my nephew, I am always with a cup of coffee. It became my go-to energizer every night, and I sometimes buy snacks outside the hospital too.
His white blood cells and platelet count had been fluctuating for 3 days. His temperature was just between 37 and 39, so he needed to have paracetamol every four hours.
On the 4th day, he showed signs of recovery. That was a relief not only to us, but also to the doctors and nurses looking after him. And they told us to stay for another day so they could observe whether we were getting ready for discharge.
And on the 5th day, the nurses came to check his status again, and we were finally told to process his discharge form and billing. We finished them early as my nephew was really excited to go home. After a few hours of processing everything, we did not forget to thank the nurses. And we went home with big smiles.
