This weather has been brutal! My little girl doesn’t have any long socks, and with the cold getting more intense lately, I thought of making her a pair of long socks Instead of running to the market, I grabbed one of her short socks, some scrap stretchy fabric, and made a DIY pair of long socks for her.
It was simple to make! Here’s how I made it, in case you want to try it too 👇
✂️ DIY Long Socks Tutorial
🧵 What You’ll Need:
- Stretchy fabric
- A pair of socks (for tracing)
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
🧩 Step 1: Trace the Sock
I took one of her short socks, laid it flat, and traced around it onto the fabric but I added 3 extra inches at the top so it would cover more of her leg.
I cut out that pattern on fabric. You’ll need two shapes for each sock:
- One long piece (top part)
- One rounded piece (for the toe)
🪡 Step 2: Sew the heel
- I placed the rounded piece to the end of the long piece, right sides facing each other.
- Then I sewed around the curved edge to make the heel.
🧷 Step 3: Stitch the Sides
- I folded the long piece over, right sides together.
- Sewed from top to bottom, following the shape of the sock.
- Left the top open.
🔁 Step 4: Turn and Repeat
- Flipped the sock right side out, it actually looked like a sock!
- Repeated the same process for the second one.
I didn’t bother hemming the top edge since the fabric didn’t fray, but you can if you want a neater look.
It’s such a quick and useful project. The socks are comfy, warm, and they fit her just fine. Plus, I got to use some leftover fabric from my wife's stash instead of letting it sit in there.
And honestly, seeing her wear something I made with my hands… priceless!
