I don't even want to beat around the bush on this one. I mean, if you're a Nigerian, in Nigeria, irrespective of whatever state you reside or how physically appealing the looks of your environment is, you would agree with me on this one. The environment is unhealthy. My environment is far from being healthy. It's so annoying to even think and write about it.
And worse, it's not just about the physical looks of our immediate environment. It goes far beyond that to what we don't see and the conditions in which we live. Health, as wey me know and by a simple definition, is a state of normalcy, safety, and well-being. Unfortunately for me(us), we can not say that we find ourselves in that state.
First off, our physical environment is a mess. We are being bombarded with pollution from all corners. There is tye issue of land pollution from reduse being dumped just about anywhere on the road. Even in areas where there are waste sites, people would rather litter than properly dispose of their waste. This then gives rise to air pollution, which is harmful to human life. Not to forget that insects and microorganisms begin to dwell in these areas, causing issues for people. Oh, there's also the felling of trees. The air these days is very thick and uncomfortable. Unfortunately, we would rather have houses swarmed side by side than leave trees to be and be of help to ensure proper
There's the water pollution from wastes running into streams and rivers, killing aquatic life, making the water unclean for use, and becoming sites for microorganisms to dwell and cause havoc to the environment. And yet, there's the issue of these polluted waters spilling into farmlands, running the soil, killing the plants, and reducing productivity. It's really worrisome.
And then there's the air pollution that stem from having companies, which emit some form of waste into the air, being built beside residential areas causing health hazards in addition to the defeating sounds they make. There are exhaust fumes that are harmful that come from old, poorly maintained vehicles that are hazardous too. I could go on and on to list the ways by which my environment is unhealthy and yet keeps deteriorating daily.
My idea of a healthy environment might as well be one that is clean, sane, and fit for human living. I know, I know, we are already living here, and we're getting by, but then, it doesn't make it any less unfit. We do not realize this, but our environment constitutes a large portion of our problem, especially those in relation to physical and mental well-being.
There are other areas and things to be consodered before we can fully say that our encironment is healthy, but maybe, first of, if we tackled the above mentioned problems, then we are on to a good start. And this responsibility isn't and shouldn't fall solely on the government but on every individual in the environment.
Thanks for gracing this post. Greetings!
