THE TEACHER’S KAMMA

Students may experience an interest in being careful with what they say towards their Teacher.

This is Moral Concern, and is a result of their Teacher using Right Speech.

A new student can sometimes recognize that a Teacher is sharing the Truth within a few moments of hearing them speak.

This can occur when the student had already been practicing aspects of The Teachings through other traditions, self-help books, from lessons they learned in life, and so on.

Due to the hardship and discontentment they experienced prior to coming in contact with a Teacher, they can have great respect for their Teacher.

Worry, concern and fear can arise, given that there is conceit in the mind, sensual desire, and in some cases, ill-will.

The student can be concerned that they might say the wrong thing or do something that would lead to them no longer being able to study with the Teacher they found.

Over time, as it becomes obvious that The Teacher does not get offended, the respect remains. This is due to The Teacher’s decision to use Right Speech.

The Teacher uses Right Speech towards their students, so Right Speech is being returned to them.

It is not possible for everyone to use Right Speech, even towards a Teacher. But through wise decision making, a large majority of people who interact with a Teacher choose to interact with politeness, kindness, friendliness and respect.

To learn more about Right Speech and The Eight Fold Path, you can refer to Chapter 4 and 5 of Volume 1 in The Words of The Buddha book series.

  • May you be safe.
  • May you be well.
  • May you be free of discontentment and the suffering it causes.
