Education is very important; that is why everyone wants to go to school to acquire knowledge. An amazing thing about school is that it connects you to people and is a nice place to be. As students, we always picture a future very promising and full of opportunities. There is no student that doesn’t wish to get a good-paying job after graduation. When it comes to people that dream big, I give it to the student. They always want their life to be excellent.

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride on. Wow, life is not the way we predict it to be. After graduating from school, we will face the reality of life. That is when you will realise that tomorrow is not promised. Entering the labour market, you understood how competitive it is searching for work for two years without getting any because there are limited jobs. By the time you search for a job and you don’t see that, that is when you will realise that life is sweet in Bollywood movies. We have no choice but to wake up to reality; you have to hustle just to put food on your table.

Most students always have this mindset that life after school is better, and during their time in school, they didn’t associate with people. While some of them only focus on their studies, they forget that for you to get a job in this country, you need to have connections to secure a job. School is not only a place to study; you can also meet people who will help you in the future.

My advice to fresh graduates

As a fresh graduate, life will not be easy for you, untouchable, because there is a probability that the life you dream of you will not see. Don’t give up; keep fighting and pushing. Believe me, it will not be easy, but you need to be patient and stay positive.

As a graduate, you have to be open to any opportunity that comes your way. Don’t just focus on your discipline and limit yourself to other opportunities that will come your way. Life is one thing that we can’t predict. I have seen people who studied engineering but ended up working in a bank as a cashier. That is my country for you. We have to be ready to grab any opportunity that comes our way.

The way our country is now, I advise every graduate to have at least one skill. There are thousands of graduates graduating every year from various institutions, but there are limited jobs to offer them. That is why during NYSC they encourage everyone to learn at least one skill. With your skill you can be a boss of your own and also create employment for people.

As a graduate, don’t look down on yourself; believe in yourself and be positive. Be open to every opportunity that comes your way; life is unpredictable. Be ready to grab every single opportunity that comes your way.

This is my response on the weekly prompts #indiaunited topic. What advice would you give to someone leaving school today?
