One thing I’d always appreciate in a movie? Those who steer away from the conventional. A unique style of storytelling, and a less complicated plot than we may be used to, especially with genres like mystery or thriller. What drew me to this movie was how immersive it was from start to finish, and how, from the very first scene, the right notes, so to speak, were hit. So, yeah, let’s delve a bit into one of the beauties of 2018.

David Kim lives in San Jose with his daughter, Margot. One day, Margot goes to study group with friends, but that night, she tries to reach out to David, but he is asleep. The following day, however, David tries to contact Margot, but he is unable to. He doesn’t panic, believing that she’s in any of her usual places, like her piano lesson, but when the instructor tells him that Margot hasn’t attended or paid for her piano lessons in the last six months, David is nearly hysterical.
This movie showcases the various ways David explores to find his eighteen-year-old daughter, not leaving it in the hands of the sheriff and the detective attached to him. What are the odds that he will discover that, contrary to his beliefs, he may not have known his daughter, after all?

Why I would recommend this movie to people of all ages is because of how practical and relatable it is. No, the father does not miraculously develop superpowers that would enable him to vanquish his perceived enemies. He is portrayed as a regular father who just wants to find his missing daughter, and therefore, explores options that any regular person would consider.
Social media and technology and incorporated in an easy-to-follow way in this movie. Understanding that a teenager’s life is perpetually integrated with social media, he makes the most of it to reach his goal. The storyline is linear and follows a single thread, but what grips you is the progression and how exquisitely the story is told.
It is impossible, I must say, to talk about this film without commending the stellar performance of John Cho, who starred as Margot’s father. He interpreted his role impeccably and portrayed a true father who has a missing daughter whom he has no intentions of losing. His acting alone contributed a large percentage to why this movie is a success, showing the essence of beauty in simplicity.
Cannot in-depthly talk about this film without revealing spoilers, so I’ll just say that this is a film which has imperfections you can ignore because of how minute said imperfections are when compared to the general masterpiece that is the movie. Hope you enjoy!
