As always when I find a free game on gaming platforms, here's a little extra this week courtesy of Steam. Steam usually doesn't give away too many free games unless it wants to promote something. They've been slow this year, and I don't think this title fixes that, but it's still free! We can't complain.
Besides the fact that it's an arcade-style game that will remind many players of the arcades of the 90s, the truth is that it's quite close to that line of retro games that might have something more to offer.
This week I came across a little gem that's being given away for a limited time and deserves at least a couple of minutes of your attention: Distant Space, a shoot 'em up that looks like it came straight from a 1990s arcade. 80.
My first thought was, "Surely this is another one of those generic five-minute games," but the truth is, it has its charm. It's a simple, straightforward, and unpretentious title. You take control of a ship, advance through scenarios filled with enemies that want to blow you to pieces, and shoot nonstop while dodging projectiles from all sides. Yes, the concept is simple, but that's where the fun lies.
Distant Space feels like those classics we played on old machines or emulators, with pixelated graphics, neon lights, and a soundtrack that sounds like a cheap synth… in a good way. The whole thing has that 80s feel that makes you smile while you wonder why you're so focused on something you could have played 30 years ago.
The Steam community has given it "Very Positive" reviews, and I honestly get it: it's one of those titles that doesn't seek to reinvent the wheel, but rather reminds you why arcades were so addictive. Sometimes you just want something that delivers action, explosions, and that metallic "pew pew pew" sound that transports you straight back in time.
Obviously, don't expect spectacular graphics or a deep story. There are no cinematics, moral choices, or open worlds here; it's all bullets, reflexes, and nostalgia. But that's exactly what makes it so enjoyable. Plus, considering it's normally less than a dollar and now it's free, there's no excuse not to add it to your library.
What I do hope in the coming months is that Steam will become a little more in tune with what it gives away during these holidays. I don't think its main model is giving away games like the Epic Store, but it's certainly a pretty good way to motivate players to use these platforms.

Como siempre que hago cuando me encuentro algun juego gratis en las plataformas de gaming aqui les va un pequeño extra en la semana cortesia de Steam, que usualmente no da demasiados juegos gratis a menos que quiera promocionar algo, han estado flojos este año y creo que este titulo no lo arregla pero aun asi es gratis! no nos podemos quejar
Ademas de que viene uno del estilo arcade que van a recordarle a muchos jugadores las arcades de los 90s, la verdad es que está bastante apegado a esa linea de juegos retro que capaz que tienen algo mas para ofrecer
Esta semana me encontré con una pequeña joya que está siendo regalada por tiempo limitado y que merece al menos un par de minutos de tu atención: Distant Space, un shoot ’em up con toda la pinta de haber salido directo de una recreativa de los 80.
Lo primero que pensé fue: “seguro es otro de esos juegos genéricos que duran cinco minutos”, pero la verdad es que tiene su encanto. Es un título sencillo, directo al grano y sin pretensiones. Tomas control de una nave, avanzas por escenarios plagados de enemigos que te quieren volar en pedazos y disparas sin parar mientras esquivas proyectiles por todos lados. Sí, el concepto es simple, pero justo ahí está la gracia.
Distant Space se siente como esos clásicos que jugábamos en máquinas viejas o en emuladores, con gráficos pixelados, luces de neón y una banda sonora que suena a sintetizador barato… en el buen sentido. Todo tiene ese aire ochentero que te hace sonreír mientras te preguntas por qué estás tan concentrado en algo que podrías haber jugado hace treinta años.
La comunidad de Steam lo tiene con reseñas “Muy positivas”, y sinceramente lo entiendo: es de esos títulos que no buscan reinventar la rueda, sino recordarte por qué los arcades eran tan adictivos. A veces solo quieres algo que te dé acción, explosiones y ese sonido metálico de “pew pew pew” que te transporta directo al pasado.
Obviamente no esperes gráficos espectaculares ni historia profunda. Aquí no hay cinemáticas, decisiones morales ni mundos abiertos; hay balas, reflejos y nostalgia. Pero eso es justo lo que lo hace tan agradable. Además, considerando que su precio normal es menos de un dolar y ahora está gratis, no hay excusa para no añadirlo a tu biblioteca.
Lo que si espero en los proximos meses es que Steam se ponga un poco mas a tono con lo que regala en estas fechas, no creo que su principal modelo sea el de regalar juegos como Epic Store pero sin duda es una forma bastante buena para motivar a los jugadores a usar estas plataformas
