The ability to fall asleep anytime, any place and under any circumstances has always been a skill I pride myself for having. Even in a noisy environment far from any form of comfort all I have to do is close my eyes and I am off to sandman's world. This unique ability gave me the nickname "sarkin Barci" (king of sleep in Hausa) and till this day, I still uphold this title like my entire identity depended on it. However this talent happens to be a double edge sword since I have very little control over it. There have been instances where I am supposed to stay awake but fall victim to sleep just to end up apologizing in the end.
Sometimes it has cost personal harm and till this day I say I still blame sleep as the primary reason why I sucked at calculus in secondary school. Back then I used to justify my distaste for mathematics as the reason for it but when it started to transfer even into subjects I loved as well, I realized I needed to keep this at bay else I fall into ruin. Sleeping has also launched me into countless embarrassing experiences and the one that sticks out the most is a memory I will never forget in a hurry. Around 2019, right before the COVID 19 pandemic became a worldwide threat, I was still working as a manager at a souvenir store and was always stressed from the numerous tasks I performed on a daily basis. Right before closure, I usually rush down to the bank to make a deposit of the sales for that day after my employer and I are down balancing the account. So this Thursday was no different, I also had to go to the bank but this time I was super tired and the line was extremely long. Judging from the length of the queue, I knew I was not going back to work anytime soon and so the plan was to get a spot where I would rest for a bit before it got to my turn but as I looked around, all the chairs were filled and there was not a single spot where I could relax so I decided to do it standing on the queue ..... Horrible mistake.
In the course of me resting on my feet, I drifted off into a deep sleep in the middle of a moving line. Customers behind me who noticed I was sleeping went around me to make transactions instead of waking me up and I was soon left alone standing on the queue sleeping. I bet this would have continued for way longer but fortunately for me a good Samaritan woke me up, I opened my eyes to waves of laughter from all directions😔😔. Being an unplanned center of attraction, I quickly walked up to the counter, deposited my funds and rushed outside away from the prying eyes of my newly acquired audience. Luckily for me the money was handed to me in a secured bag, tightly hung over my shoulder. I will never forget this day for the rest of my life and till this day some of the bankers who know about this real life legend still make fun of me about it😂🤣🤣.
