In a digitized society where more than half the world's population are highly dependent on the internet as both a source of livelihood and entertainment, social media is slowly becoming a globally accepted way of live. Created in the late 90s with the purpose of connecting people around the world, sharing information, promoting businesses and bridging the barrier caused by distance, it can be seen as the new home away home usable by anyone with access to the Internet. Over the years there have been different variations of social media platforms starting from the very first in 1997 to the likes of 2go, Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter (X), Instagram , TikTok etc. The journey of evolution of the social media space has been tremendous with continuous notable changes yet their purpose still remains the same. Despite the numerous impact social media has contributed to the growth of the society, it is not without shortcomings and sometimes these ridiculous encounters are worthy enough to make one question if these platforms were truly beneficial to the human race like they claim to be.

As a teenager in high school who was hurled into the social media framework thanks to the wave of 2go in the early 2000s I got emotional attached to a lady named Sandra after months of constant conversation. Talking to her was always the highlight of the day and we connected on a level that transcended friendship. We had similar interests, all my friends knew about and everything felt like this was going to be a happily ever after story until she ghosted me for no reason. Dealing with that kind of situation was difficult for me especially at that age and the only way I knew how to was to completely shutdown my emotions even though it was extremely difficult.

Three years later during a get together with two of my classmates in high school, we were having a conversation about how engrossed with 2go back in the day and my then online girlfriend Sandra popped into the conversation. While I still telling them how she left without a reason or saying anything I could notice them laughing under their breath until they could not hold it in anymore and decided it was finally time to spill the beans. Apparently the Sandra I knew never existed because these boys were catfishing me from the very beginning, using me as their source of amusement. I doubted them for awhile until no longer deny the obvious truth. We laughed about the whole thing but deep down I was badly hurt that the entire story was one big lie.

2go is not as popular as it used to be back then but currently if there's one social media platforms that comes close to the popularity it had back then, it would have to be Instagram. Instagram is the renowned headquarters for fake life and catfishing and if I had the power to ban it completely, I'd do so in a heartbeat. The world would obviously be a better place for it because not only is it an avenue for lies and deceit, it is also popular for creating unrealistic standards which ends up ruining the mindset of the younger generation. Mark Zuckerberg this is an appeal to you, please take Instagram down permanently because I think my friends are trying to catfish me into another fake relationship again or maybe I am just being paranoid but it is still better to be safe than sorry.....
