When the Hunt Takes a Back Seat

I just never thought the day would come that coin collecting would stop being fun for me. It has been my hobby off and on since I was a teenager. I have always enjoyed the thrill of a cool find at a flea market, dealers shop, or coin show. It was like treasure hunting. It was a little rush each time I would find one of those little treasures, at least they were treasures to me.

BUt recently that feeling has been fading. It is not completely gone, just muffled a bit. The shiny that once called my name are now silent. The albums that once had pages that continually received new additions, now site untouched. I still care about those coins, but my priorities have shifted. Somewhere along the line this last couple of months I realized I am not getting as much joy out of the hobby as I once did.

This realiztion did not happen overnight. In fact, it was a gradual thing over the last few months. The more I focused on the outside world, people, the less coin collecting seemed to take up. I stopped seeing value in things that just sit in albums or cases.

At first, as silly as it may sound to a non-collector, I felt guilty. It feels like a piece of myself is being lost as I am considering even selling off my collection. But after some thought I realize this isn't a loss, it is actually growth.

I guess that what happens to some of us as we get older. The meaning in things change. Honeslty Im okay with that. The decision still hasn't been made if I will sell or not, but do feel my collecting days are over for now.

It was a good run, but it is time to move on to other activities.
