I went to the hospital recently to visit someone I love, she's like a mum to me. I had just celebrated her birthday a little while before, and we had so much fun together, so much joy and laughter. The hospital visit was a completely different experience. She was in bad shape, she was unable to walk, and now needed to use a wheelchair. The moment she saw me she started to cry, and I couldn't help it either. I was completely overwhelmed and at a loss for words, I just stood there crying with her.
She explained to me that a week after her birthday, she had a fall while going for an appointment, and that moment changed it all for her. She has not walked since, and although she is slowly getting better, it is obvious that she will be utilizing the wheelchair for at least some time. How long will that time be? it's hard to tell even by the doctors. Being in the hospital room with her was profound and opened my eyes to many things.
I started to think about how much we, as humans forget and totally take many things for granted. Especially in regard to the ability to walk, to move freely, to take care of ourselves, none of which we appreciate until it is taken away. I have always tried to be thankful, but man, we are human and we get so comfortable and familiar with things that we forget how treasured they are.
We become so accustomed to life, that once we lose something we find out what life is really made of. I am writing this from my heart and from the pain i felt that day. Seeing my mum in that condition really broke my heart. As a result of our relationship and the bond between us, I felt as though it was happening to me. It evoked memories of my own struggles and reminded me of how fragile life truly is.
But in the midst of that pain, I understood one thing : we must live in thanksgiving.
First, we must be thankful to God, for life, breath, for the things we think we accomplished on our own. In the end, those things are only possible through grace. We did not get here because of our own power. Second, we must thank those around us, friends, families, neighbors, strangers. There are people who have supported our growth and development in big ways, or the smallest ways. Without those supports, we wouldn't be who we are.
The same is true for people who even challenge us, or hurt us as the most. We may hate them but they play important roles for our growth. They push us to improve, to be stronger, to become more aware. Make sure to appreciate those around you, if you love someone, let them know. If someone has helped you, thank them. Don't wait for a better time. The best time to express gratitude is NOW!
To everyone who has supported me, in particular in this space, even those we may not know each other well, I just want to say thank you! Your presence, kindness, and help are valued. We are all connected, and each act of kindness leaves a mark. Remember to live in thanksgiving always.
Grateful Heart
