At The Super Market

The part of Louisville that I call home is known as the South End. It's got something of a reputation for being a bit rowdy that's only partially earned, but I've grown to love it here. The old melting pot that they used to talk about in this country is still going strong here, with this being the most diverse part of town. Comes a lot closer to childhood imaginings of what a city was like than the cookie cutter commercialism of the East End.

Still, there's just something atomizing about a city, as if the greater the mass of humanity the harder it is to see the trees for the forest. Growing up my next door neighbor was a half mile up the road but we knew them better than the ones half a stone's throw away here.

Here in the South End we're kind of lucky, we have the South End Community Market bringing folks together on Saturday mornings from May to October. I've been trying to stop in each week and snap a few photos, with the added bonus of getting to know some of my neighbors. Or at least some of the vendors, who turned out to be neighbors...

A supermarket it is not, but it is a super market, with food, crafts, and even live music. Not to mention a noticeable lack of surly, underpaid employees. Don't know about y'all, but I'd much rather get my food from somebody I know who lives up the street than a corporate box that's just going to turn around and use my money to buy another politician.

Need to do something more in depth with the market but haven't quite figured out the how, would love to see more shindigs like this.

Will just have to keep going back I guess. At least I don't have to worry about being lost in the supermarket.
