Hey, today is #sundayclassics day again and I would like to draw your attention to the East German band [Sandow](http://sandow.de/).

This band was in my youth, with one of my favorites.
That was almost 30 years ago.
The band Sandow was founded in 1982 in the [East German](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Germany) city [Cottbus](https://goo.gl/maps/S5fbtcPjz432) .
The name "Sandow" therefore refers to a district of the same name in this city.
The music style of this band is hard to estimate, it is a mix of "alternative and experimental" music.
I would say that this is post-punk.
They have released several albums over the years.
Among them were two radio plays and the play "KänGuru".
The current album is called ["Entfernte Welten"](http://sandow.de/musik/) .

The lyrics of the band are mostly in German and until the end of the [GDR] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Germany) , even for German, very cryptic and meaningless.
One reason for this was that it was dangerous to openly criticize the regime at that time and it also made it more difficult to be admitted as an "amateur band" in the GDR.
Die Texte der Band sind meist in deutsch und bis zum Ende der [DDR](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Germany), selbst für deutsche, sehr kryptisch und nichts sagend.
Das lag zum Einen daran, dass es in dieser Zeit gefährlich war offen Kritik am damaligen Regime auszuüben und es erschwerte auch die Zulassung als " Amateure - Band " in der DDR.

At the end of 1988 the band gained nationwide fame with the release of the East German documentary ["Whispering and Screaming"](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fl%C3%BCstern_%26_SCHREIEN_%E2%80%93_Ein_Rockreport)
At that time, this film was almost a revolution in the film business and was supposed to be a sign for the turning point towards a dialogue with the youth in the GDR.
Unfortunately, this insight came much too late, as the development of history shows.

Landesweite Bekanntheit erlangte die Band zum Ende 1988 mit dem Erscheinen des ostdeutschen Dokumentarfilm ["Flüstern und Schreien"](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fl%C3%BCstern_%26_SCHREIEN_%E2%80%93_Ein_Rockreport)
Dieser Film war zur damaligen Zeit, schon fast eine Revolution im Filmbereich und sollte ein Zeichen zur Wende, hin zum Dialog mit der Jugend in der DDR einleiten.
Leider kam diese Einsicht viel zu späht, wie die Entwicklung der Geschichte zeigt.

I had met this band 30 years ago at the Baltic Sea personally, without knowing that they were also at that time a quite well-known band.
For me they were funny people who made music for fun and with whom you could party very well.
Despite the circumstances it was a wonderful time and I remember them with pleasure.
Ich hatte diese Band vor 30 Jahren an der Ostsee persönlich kennengelernt, ohne zu wissen, dass sie eine auch zur damaligen Zeit schon recht bekannte Band war.
Sie waren für mich lustige Leute die zum Spaß Musik machten und mit denen man sehr gut feiern konnte.
Es war damals trotz der Umstände doch eine wunderbare Zeit und ich erinnere mich gern an sie zurück.
