When it comes to health, many people like to separate it into two: mental and physical health. Some went as far as arguing, which is very important. But the truth is, you can't really choose one over the other. Both are connected like two sides of a coin. If your body feels weak, it can affect how you feel mentally; if your mind is not in a good place, it can also affect your body.
Physical health is usually easier for people to notice because it deals with things we can see and feel directly. Eating good food, exercising, resting, and avoiding harmful habits like smoking so the body can stay strong. This drinking part is one thing that is killing the youth gradually because most of them drink on an empty stomach. There is this very handsome and intelligent guy I met during my youth service year; although he's good-looking, he has a drinking problem. He doesn't womanize, but his love for drink is something else.
His water bottle always contains alcohol. I used to warn him about it, but he would always tell me that I'm too uptight and that I should loosen up and enjoy life. What happened later? He was later diagnosed with liver problems. I reminded him when I was warning him he was lucky that it wasn't bad when they found out; he later stopped drinking. These are things we take for granted and call enjoyment.
For physical health, I do practice taking a 30-minute or more walk around my vicinity almost every day after work; it helps to boost my energy, improves blood flow to the heart, and most times it puts me in a good mood. I drink water first thing in the morning to make sure I have a proper rest each day, especially on weekends when I don't go to work. This is one of the simple habits I do, and it's a powerful physical well-being.
Mental health may not be visible like physical health, but it is equally important too. It's all about how one thinks, feels, and handles life's challenges. Stress, anxiety, and sadness can weigh the mind down and eventually make the body weak and tired. That's why taking care of our mental health is not a luxury but a necessity. My friend called up one night to say that she is having a mental break; she is tired of the pressure from family, bills keep piling up, and, in fact, as she is talking to me, she feels like ending it.
I told her to talk to her parents, but she said anytime she talks about it, they will wave it off. Was able to talk her out of it. Sometimes talking to a trusted friend, praying, meditating, or simply taking a break when it becomes overwhelming can go a long way in keeping the mind stable.
How does one balance them both without neglecting the other? Simply look for activities that nourish both. Exercise helps to balance both, eating nutritious food that strengthens the body while boosting the brain. Having a proper sleep as and when due instead of pressing a phone at midnight.
