Culture, to me, is more than just a way of life; it is identity, memory, pride, and connection. It's the thread that links us to our ancestors and gives us a sense of belonging in a world filled with diversity. It's the stories they pass down, the music they play, the rules they follow, spoken and unspoken.
The womanhood celebration
I come from Nigeria, a country blessed with rich and diverse cultures. Each tribe here has something unique. In my tribe, one notable cultural value is respect, especially in greetings. Younger people slightly bend to greet the elders, and there's deep honor given to age and wisdom. We also have vibrant festivals full of music, masquerades like the popular nwatam, and colorful attires, often tied to harvests, ancestry, or community celebrations. And the food?Absolutely rich and flavorful of onunu and pepper soup, our rich native soup, fisherman soup, and more, each meal is a celebration on its own.
Let me break it down a little. I will start with the festival. We always celebrate welcoming ladies to womanhood, but recently it is only from age 40 that is allowed, expect you are married before that age, and it's very colorful. There is always a Carnival that unites my community with other tribes in and outside Nigeria. We have a swimming competition where participants swim from the shore to a particular spot in a big river, like a race.We have the water bike competition.

We have a dancing competition too. When it comes to respect, we don't play around with it. If you are five in number as siblings, whether more or less, you can't call your elder sister, brother, or anyone who is your senior by their names. Another thing is, no matter what your elder does, you can't insult them at all, or else you will pay a huge fine and receive the punishment of kneeling down on periwinkle skin too.
Another thing I like about my culture is that whether male or female, they all have equal rights to their father's wealth. In my culture, every child is treated equally; there is no special preference or treatment based on gender. One thing about my culture that I wish could be changed is the rule prohibiting dogs in the community not even by accident, as they will be killed, and you will be fined as well as the owner.
